ummm like the maps where the AI camps at the top of a sheer cliff face?
yeah thats i reason i refuse to play the VI campaign.
its just so fake attacking an army that wouldnt be able to stand up on that slope never mind mass march.
Of course movies go more for the entertainment than accuracy history. I'm pretty sure many of you have seen a movie where an army retreats to a cliff and vuala theres the bigger half of the army on top of the cliff. The only problem is that this would be hard to simulate into the game.
My real question does anyone know any battles where this actually happened in history. (well you could say D-day had a bit of this scenario where there were many cliffs to scale to get to the Germans gun positions)
It had just dawned on me that quite a few battles of the last century had some big battles that cliffs were a major factor. This leads me to the conclusion that all defenders looked for the best position to stop the attackers from overrunning there position all the way back to ancient warfare. So it just makes me wonder how unrealistic the cliffs are. I can say there Is'nt a rediculous amount of cliffs in the game map and whats this game about ...... redoing history in an entertaining way
I'm glad someone brought this up because I also dislike most of the mountain maps in MTW/VI. The extreme slopes a) make it nearly impossible for the attacker to scale the heights without exhausting his forces and b) missiles units defending on steep slopes are unable to adequately lower the angle of their shots in order to hit the enemy because of the min/max angle values in the projectilestats file
I wouldn't mind if the mountainous terrain negated the ability to move on it thus forming passes and valleys more suitable for combat. I can see how the AI would have a problem with this but at least we would finally see some Thermopylae style battles where a handful of men could hold off many times their number by simply holding a critical pass. Realistically when it comes to mountainous maps we should see lots of constrictive paths that lead to small valley clearings of varying terrain.
I'd also like to see the addition of gentler slopes for hills.
Unfortunately based on many of the RTW screenshots it seems like exaggerated elevations are still in use. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif

the slopes ruin the game for me.
i agree with gentle slopes where thes a 40 foot climb but spread over several hundered feet. not a 60 foot climb spread over 10 feet.
I saw that campaign map in the video, its a bad view, but those mountains in there at Italy look way to tall and cartoony, I hope they fix that or its just because of the bad view.
I like the mountain maps, and the cliffs. My only problem is with playbility. The moutains and cliffs make it harder to maeuver your troops and the camera view seems to be freaky.
I'd be fine with mountain maps in RTW. I would imagine that there will be mountain maps, and mountain forts, in RTW. All the better, just hope that the playability is good too.

I'm pretty sure that there will be some mountain passes in RTW which will have to be protected by means of a permanent installation. The reason being that these passes could be one of the few ways to cross the Italian Alps for example.

infact no i wouldnt mind the cliffs as long as the AI doesnt camp on them.
its so gay....
you get a great spot then the bloody AI marches across the map and your so pissed off by the time you catch it you loose half your elite units in a big hill rapage.

People are pissed that the A.I. camps on a big hill ....... are'nt the defenders suppose to make the attackers pay a price? I don't really see what the problem is here as you could always mod the map for ironing boards. The big hills don't bother me as it gives the A.I. an edge as for multiplayer I completely understand. Historically was'nt there many upsets in a battle where an inferior force beats a superior force because the inferior force picked a superior postion. Now heres where I am really lost ......... Historical accuracy please please please I want historical accuracy Historically defenders always picked a good defensive position and if the territory permitted hills were one of them.
The thing I hate are the trees you can lose track of your troops there and is very hard to manage but in reality did'nt the Romans have trouble fighting in the forests. Do I hate them yes. Do I want them out of the game no.
The main point is that on a 17 inch monitor (19 21 or whatever you have) can you put the hills and cliffs to scale in an efficient time as not to delay the game plus the fact of going back to what is known about the battlefieds and terrain of hundreds of years ago.
And finally how many of you as defender go hehe big hill and use it to its fullest advantage.
Yes it's a lot of position, position, position and more position. Use it or lose it. For MP I have no word such as camping, in my vocabulary.
Nice post.

I wouldn't mind steep slopes and woodland being available to loose order light infantry, but being impassable to close order and cavalry.
