Hi Lordz,
Great work with the napoleonic mod beta, I've played it a lot
I can't get on the dungeon board so I'll post my ideas here, (maybe others will too?)

1. Will there be more smoke in the final mod?(like lots more)
2. Have you got your in game music sorted? - I have a few downloaded fife and drum marches etc.
3. Will unit size be modded?
4. On the dungeons forum there is a lot of talk of square formations - will this work with TW's engine as squares seemed to rely on horse been unwilling to charge a thicket of bayonets and instead rode around them. Cavalry in TW has no such problem.

Anyhow - like I said these are minor criticisms and thanks again for great little redcoats blowing chunks out of Crapaud columns.

While I am not a member of the Lords, I can answer one of those questions at least.

The square formation at the moment is impossible to simulate accuratly using the MTW engine, but Lord of Storms has been working on a compromise at the moment to make the AI form a deeper formation when faced with cavalry, which although not perfect is a step in the right direction.

Also let me just say welcome to the Nap mod community, there are quite a few of us who like to play Nap Mod multiplayer online, and we are always looking for more players. Head on over here to find out more:

We also discuss aspects of the mod and of Napoleonic history in general.

Hope to see you around more

Greetings ThinDigital I have been experimenting with new formations for the AI (See my thread on the subject in the Dungeon How to add Historical Formations to MTW's AI) I have been trying diffrent troop compositions for the square and various commands to try and make the Squares Infantry hold in the face of a Cav charge
which has proven to be somewhat difficult, but I have come across some new data that might change things for the better,The way it stands now the AI can use The MTW version of the square (which is a 3 sided rectangle)and it protects the Generals cav unit deep inside the formation, but usually breaks during the first attack, I have it now that given time in between assaults the AI will always try to regroup into the square to protect the Generals unit
So thats progress , but not quite the desired effect.
I will keep trying. I will pose your question to Lord Krazy
our resident Smoke Dude http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif Cheers LOS

Hi LOS
thanks for the reply, improved cavalry / infantry interaction will definately make the mod more realistic to the period, i saw your screenies of the square formations and they look great.
Im not a modder myself but have been wondering if you can make use of the way units are 'forced' round buildings and other obstacles to get the cavalry to wrap around the square and not just charge one face (making the other 3 faces redundant.
(I took it that the smoke hadn't been done in the 1.7 beta - it would be great to the have battlefield have choked with smoke a la shogun TW musket battles.

thanks for postin,

Check out the new thread in the dungeon (And now for something completely different}regarding the develpoment of a new battle map editor for MTW that addresses this very issue, to make battle maps with buildings, textures etc, for specific eras, like Napoleon,LOTR, Hellenic etc LOS

Napoleonic period was very short (1789 ? - 1815), sth like 26 years or maybe even less. So will there be a time limit in that MOD (till 1815?) or it will be just set that the beginning is lets say 1789 and the game ends when Napoleon dies or his empire is defeated?

The late period for the mod begins in 1750 and the game end date is set at 1887 the dates set in the era txt file are Early 1687 high 1705 and late 1750, the focus of course on the Napoleonic era will be in the Late period when key figures such as Napoleon himself will become available. Historical background includes info that starts in the French Revolution era.

As there are three periods set, does it mean that there will also be three campaigns? And if it is so - are the factions available the same in each of these campaigns?

Thindigital, I have indeed made more progress regarding the AI using The Square as a defensive formation, while Square is now in the AI's reptoire it is still used ineffectively in my opinion simply because Infantry units will immediatley break ranks in the face of a Cav. charge. I have it to a point where they will hold formation in the face of the iniital charge, then actually advance at the oncoming Cav units thats a switch, they dont break and run they break and attack this is being worked on whenever I get a spare moment, I will say that in the course of battle the defensive AI will constantly try and reform The Square when there is a lull in the battle, and always protecting the Generals unit. So while that is progress, I will continue my experiments until I can get the line to hold for a reasonable period of time, I have figured out how to add any of MTW 's historical formations to the AI 's repetoir so it adds a little divesrity to game play.
As to the size of the campaign download it will be a big one as we are changing and adding many new components, this is unavoidable. LOS

Well, the forum for the RFG does indeed apear to be empty, but I assure you the members are still active. It's just that most of our members are in the middle of testing the beta version of the Nap mod campaign and that is taking all of our time at the moment.

Smoke that lingers aftet the event is not something
I know how to do . If it's possible I'm sure someone will tell me , but until then no chance.

All it will be lacking really is an engine that supports Napoleonic warfare and most other things that would make it perfect . http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Have I no shame you may ask ?
Well I do and that is why it has been made clear
from the start that we will do the best we can but it will
never be perfect.

These things are coded and all things being equal we can't change them . I'm sorry if this will detract from your enjoyment , but apart from telling lies , it's not going to happen. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

Well a version exists with 3 periods , but it is not
going to be the first release . The first release will
be far more basic and will not be that historical.

Greeting TD, We appreciate your input/feedback thats how we learn what the people want, as to a FAQ I dont know , of course the mod will have the standard in game unit, building descriptions but as far as a seperate FAQ that might be something to consider, it is a good thought. Thanks LOS
