I tried this with Varangian Guard, since I made them the royal guard for the Byz, but when I did the Royal guard unit reverted to kataphraktoi and nothing had changed.
Yes you can make them less than 60, no problem there. Problem is somewhere else.

What changes did you make in the unit prod file exactly? After you marked the varangians as royal units, did you remove this mark in the kat´s line?

K, I found the source of the problem. I use medmod 2.0 no units VI, which has both the original aswell as the MM era's. Now the normal era's react to any changes I make with gnome editor, but the MM_era's don't.
How can I change this so that MM era's also react to any changes I make.
BTW, I managed to change the royal guard to VG and made a smaller unit of 40 (though I can't use this alteration in MM_era's)

well just change the mm era unit prod file to match the default and that will work

When I do this the program gives an unknown error. I fear that any changes I make with gnome editor only count for the original era's http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

the problem your getting now seems to be the same whem many people try to edit either the unit or build prods i think you've got some extra spacing in there, that shunts information a long a column so you get things like unti cost = mounted sergeants instead of 250 or whatever
i have yet to find a sure fire way of fixing this. even using gnome, although its more common when adding units than when editing them.
sorting it ourt involves trial and error and playoing with your spacing to see if you can shunt the stuff back into the correct column. hopefully someone else here can give you a better tip on how to do this
