Well in my current campaign with the Italians, I encountered Nur al Din for the first time http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Pretty impressive... Started off as a rank 6 general with expert commander virtue http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/shock.gif I haven't really encountered many other historical generals, other than El-Cid..

Is Sallah al Din (aka Saladin) also in the game?

I thought Saladin was in action around late 1000's and onwards?

Oh yeah I finally figured out why I hadn't seen him before.. I have, but his name changes to Amir al Din once he gets a title :-/

Played as the English. Finally managed to burn Joan of Arc with my grand Inquisitor after about 6 goes. Historical accuracy rules

i think its downloadable from here actaully
other than that its onyour harddrive already
mtw/loc/eng(or other)/names.txt - scroll down until it lists heroes names, its in one big block, not specified to each faction
or
mtw/campmap/names/default_heroes.txt
lists them for each faction seperatly, including their stats (command etc) type of unit assasin Inquisitor whatever and starting year

My favorite is Werner von Urslingen for the Germans.

He starts out with the Butcher vice.

Apparently he was a general you really didn't want to meet back in the day. He had something like "Enemy of God and Piety" engraved on his shield. Not sure on the exact translation though.

I wish i could encounter more heros. I think i've only bumped into El Cid, and lets face it, he's pretty hard to miss.

Bohemond de Tankerville is also very hard to miss, but you haven't mentioned it yet http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

The bouillon/boulogne brothers in france are hard to miss as well. My personal favorite though, is snorri sturluson. It's a bit odd that he made it in as a general however, considering that he was a saga writer. Seems more like a canidate for an agent to me. of course I'm a huge fan of his work regardless.

Whilst playing as the English in the high period last night.
Met Guy of Gisbon 5 valour assassin straight away http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Very useful as i kept on being excommunicated http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif
Guy managed to kill of one pope easily.

But got excommuned again and this pope is invincible no matter how many assassins i send. So far about ten various valours (0-4) including Guy, all dead now http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif

The Pope actually has an invincible virtue it says he drinks small amounts of poison to make himself immune. He is only a level one general but gets a plus 6 valour against assassins http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/shock.gif

Gonna get him though http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pissed.gif
He's a dead man walking i tell you http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif

I did a lot of reading about Jan Ziska-- the leader of the Hussite Rebellion, founder of the Czech nation, etc. Unfortunately, this guy shows up as a HRE general late in the game. He REALLY ought to be a rebel general. Seriously...

I had Nur Al Din before. I think he started off as an Abyssinian Guardsmen for me from Egypt, or was it Antioch? I played an odd Egyptian campaign and went for bribery and rebellion building to build my empire and he was eventually governor of Flanders after conquering Ireland and Scandanavia for me.

I had Don Marco Polo once as an emissary as the Italians - I think he started off 5 stars (or else built up a few while I wasn't paying attention)... but, I used him to offer ceasefires and build alliances and he worked much more effectively than other emissaries or bishop/alim figures I had used before. Usually, after the early period, everybody hates me, never agrees to ceasefires or alliances... but, I managed to get a few with Don Marco.
