Barbarian units should be able to scavenge weapons and armor from the battlefield. So if they defeat a superior civilized army they gain more experience and better equipment.

Ya know i kinda like this idea since it gives extra incentive to taking on the more powerful nations. It might perhaps level the playing field too fast however. Part of the whole fun of being the barbarian is having to fight against the odds.

Not just barbarians - at Cannae much of Hannibal's mercenary African foot were equipped with Roman arms and armour captured in the disasters of Trebia and Lake Trasimene.

Captured elephants weer often used by lots of nations, and the Galatians used captured Seleucid scythed chariots for a little while too - although that might've been before the period of RTW.

However it wasn't always practical to use all of what was recovered - eg small-medium horses might never be able to wear cataphract armour and a fully armoured rider, while captured pikes might not be any use to troops untrained in their use, etc.

sounds like a cool idea, but impractical, if not impossible to implement.

Only game that does that really well is Close Combat, but the scope is completely different. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Well in MTW I think it is Militia Sergeants and there are a few others where the description says that they wear second hand armour that was either stripped from the dead on the battle field or handed down from a noble that was getting rid of his old armour. So scavenging for weapons and armour was always done its just what scale was it done at
