View Full Version : Buggy beta posted for v3.00.
I have posted the beta at my webpage. I have spent all evening and night debugging, and though I found a whole lot of stuff to correct, I could never get the campaigns to show up in the selection screen.
I need some help from those of you who know ways of determining where the error is occurring. Also, those of you who use the Gnome editor may be able to tell something from the units text if you load it up.
BTW, I don't *think* the omission of brackets around lists of multiple factions, provinces, etc. is causing the problem.
I have gone over the mod more than once, and the problem is either in the campaign files or the units text, or perhaps some really weird thing somewhere else. The units text may simply be too big now; I don't know, and I'm about to go to bed, so maybe some of you can find out something.
I really think that this mysterious bug is the last hurdle in the way of releasing the beta, so it would be worth it for you to give a go at determining its cause if you want to get to playing, as I do.
Well I wouldn't be able to help but keep at it. Sounds like you're almost there http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/flirt.gif

Maybe you should add brackets and of coarse the "" as well, just to see if thats the problem. I'll download it later today and have a look for myself, been silently following this one.
I just realized that the 3.0 zip will create a 3.00 Full folder, and place the mod there rather than correctly installing, but this is probably not such a bad thing.
If you want to install it, all you need do is pull the Medieval - Total War folder out of the 3.0 Full folder and paste it over the game's Medieval - Total War folder.
I may be headed for another one of my bad spells today, so I don't know when I will get around to adding brackets to the units text, or thinking up something else to try.
Well, I just spent two hours adding in all the parenthesis, and no effect.

Unfortunately my modding experience is in its infancy, would love to help but at present I venture would do more harm than good.
Nevertheless I really enjoy Medmod 2.04 so keep up the great work.

WesW,
I'd be more inclined to think the startpos
was is the file with the problem .
Are you using the default file structure?
I have not had a chance to look at it yet .

Well, it turned out there were problems in both the startpos and units text.
There were some tabs missing from some of the special action troops, which are at the end of the file, and for some reason the game was not reporting them.
The problems in the startpos files seem to be related to some changes I made to the map for Venice. I still don't know what I did wrong.
I still have to go through the placed units and correct any culture clashes, but that should be the final step. I will try and get that done later tonight, though it may be tomorrow. In any event, the mod should be ready for playing in time for start of the weekend.
Well, I started on the mod about noon today, thinking all I would have to do was some quick unit placement adjustments before posting the mod. It didn't turn out that way. I didn't realize it, but I have made a lot of changes to provincial ownership in advance of the new factions to be added later, and there were now dozens of culture conflicts, mostly with provinces reverting back to Rebel for this beta.
After I thought I had everything worked out, I loaded the game and only the early era showed up in the Selection Screen. All three were showing up when I went to bed last night, and all I remember working on today is unit placement, and when there is a conflict with units it should not show up until the campaign is loading.
So, frankly, I don't know what has happened. I did take the opportunity while going through the units to insert all of the new and re-named units in place of the old ones, so at least it was progress in that area.
Well, while writing this, I may have figured out where the conlfict stems from, but I am going to have to tackle it tomorrow. I have gotten a tension headache from working on this stuff all day, and I can't do any more tonight.
I'll start on it again tomorrow and see if I can't get those last two eras working. It's really frustrating because the Early file works fine now.

I have had similar happen when I have entered a MakeUnit:: and put ina unit that does not exist, i.e misspelt it. The Campaign just did not show up in the selection part.
That might be your problem, just a suggestion.

Yes, I had several problems like that, where I had entered the new name for an existing unit. I also had a lot of problems with provincial ownership and/or culture, different types of errors in the units text, etc.
It turns out that the quotes around everything *are* necessary, and good luck tracking down the problem when all you know is that something doesn't show up, or the game suddenly crashes.
Using Excel saved me a lot of time getting the mod organized, but I didn't know how some things worked with the program, and it cost me several hours at least tracking things down and fixing them after I formed the new units text file from the Excel page.
I think I have had literally every type of error imaginable outside of general hardware conflicts. There is no folder, almost no text file, of the mod that didn't need both additions and corrections made to it- units text, pics (all three types), actions page, deadpage, Loc files (putting everything in the Changes text didn't work, so I had to separate out the new and re-named units for all 104 descriptions and 104 names), and this doesn't even get into the startpos texts, which cost me more time than anything.
I got up yesterday and spent all day, probably 12 hrs total, on the mod, but when I went to bed all three eras loaded and ran, and all the new units showed up and ran on the custom battles.
I have some more things I want to get done before I post the beta, and I don't know how long it will take to do them. Hopefully I can get it posted tonight, knock on wood.
