Well? What do you all think of a mod for World War One. I was reading up on it lately, and I thought it would be great if there was actually a mod that enabled you to play as one of the powers in World War One. Maybe France, Austria-Hungary under some guy named Franz something, the Germans under William II, the French under some French guy, the British under George V, Russians under Nicholas II until the revolution of course http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif. But does anyone know how to make it so that the time goes by in periods of 2 weeks instead of years. Well does anyone think this would be a good idea? I could try to do it, if I could get a lot of help from people http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Fun, but hard to do.

Yeah it would be fun to pretend the thing. I have a .bif editor so I could make my own units and stuff like that. It would be very hard. Would anyone like to help me do it? I can do all the names, and campaigns, and stuff like that. It would take some time, however. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

It would bea neat mod indeed. But very difficult. I'de like to see a German infantry unit with those funny helmets with the spike on top.
BTW, it was the assasination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary that started the war. It was in Serejevo, Serbia believe...

Yes it would be very neat If any of you great people here at the dungeon would like to help me, please write down your name and e-mail address here, and we'll be set to work on this. Tools from the org are needed, such as bif editors and such. Please reply http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Hmmmm, I am not too sure.
If you wanted to be historicaly accurate, WWI warfare was not a skilled or interesting affair.
Most of the campaigns on the Western front particulary were just mass slaughters with long ranged artillery. Trench warfare was not a prety affair and battle direction would not realy take that much skill. "Up and at em lads, over the top we go".
Also would you include poison gas as a weapon? Many find this an imoral weapon so you may want to think hard about that one.
I must say though i do have a thing for WWI tanks, I would love to see a couple of MkI's steaming across the battlefeild and geting stuck in trenches and craters http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

Yes, that would be great to see some MK1 tanks crashing over the landscape, while watching the British Royal Horse Guards charge down lines of German infantry in Lorraine, while Spain joins the German forces and declares war on France, captured Aquitaine, and British forces are needed. The Italians join the war, neutrally, and conquer all of Italy, and the west provinces in the Bay of Venice. The Polish on the eastern front are captured by the Austro-Hungarians, and the Russians join the war, attacking Prussia and Pomerania, gaining many victories while the Turks and Egyptians join the Germans, fighting many victories against the French colonies of Algeria and the Spanish colony of Morocco. It would just be great to re-live that period of war. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I agree that it is not the more intersting war to put to MTW. Massed lines of infantry with again masses of artillery sitting there. I don't think that the game engine would sufficiently show the speed of the battles (not hours, but days to weeks), as the most improtant factor for the attrittion was the ability to move up reinforcements to defend faster than those able to attack. Then managing ot implement the defences would be hard, as would modifying the terrain - after all attacking should be nigh on suicide, with massive odds required to take any ground at all - in one battle 8 german divisions held off 18 British ones - and caused mass casualties to boot. And the element that it was merely a case of thinking "the more men we throw at them, we're bound to get through, any day now... the next 50,000 will do it..."
And the fact that the war ended due to economic strangulation by the British Navy does not really add to the fun.
The last mass modern war was the American Civil War (I am sure that there are loads of other wars that were fought - colonial wars for example - but these tended to be one sided slaughters).
All that effort for some tanks to break down on the battlefield seems a bit of a waste.
And if one is to go the war, one has to include gas. Immoral? Perhaps, but so what?? It happened, and one should not edit history to make it more palettable for today (something that we tend to do today - especially America). So, bring on the gas Bring on the slaughter Let's recreate the biggest mud wrestling fight in history with a bring-your-own-gun policy.
Mud: Total War.

I think modelling the effect of terrain would be very difficult, and the main show in Belgium and France was mostly about trenches. I agree that perhaps the US Civil War is one of the most modern wars susceptible to the TW engine, unless you count events like the Battle of Mbopo Gorge.

a Maxim gun. They had pointy pieces of mango.")
