Well, if my memory serves me correctly, various documentations state that if a unit gets 100 kills then a Legendary swordsman event happens. However, I'm not sure that they mean only one person, and I'm not sure that the game keeps track throughout the campaign how many kills they have. I recall just about all the times I got a Legendary swordsman, a unit's total kill after a single battle was 100+, but I haven't investigated closely enough to see whether it was one man in that unit or the whole group effort. I'm pretty sure it's always happened after a single battle when a group-unit had over 100 kills in my experience.

Achieved it when one of my guys went from rank 0 to rank 4 in a battle with one kill (a rank 4 opponent).
So I think it is a matter of how much an individual goes up in battle.

I think their is a random factor to it too.
They need to have a hamburger stand in battles, cant our fat samurai get a break?

Are you people mad? It says quite clearly in the manual that when one individual gets an honour level of three then the legendaru swordsman event happens. This may seem wierd but because the honour level of a units is spread as an average, then if a unit of 100 men gets 300 kills without losing a man they are each individual chap is likely to have 3 kills each, and this on the binary scale still means that they are at honour 2. Of course in reality kills do not happen evenly because one man with one kill has 1 honour and is therefore better in combat. I have never had a game in which the Legendary swordsman event didn't happen in the first few battles so I don't know what you are doing different.

I think it is when 1 samurai gets 5 kills. This from remembering back about 6 months or more so it may be wrong.

Legendary Swordsman happens when one soldier, not one unit, reaches a honour of 3 or 4 (can't remember which one it is?).
His honour rating will increase depending on how many kills he has and also the honour of the soldiers he has killed...
The number of kills required to increase honour are exponential, in otherwords as a soldier's honour increases more kills are needed to increase it further.....
In the battle logs it appears some soldiers gain honour quicker than others, so i can only assume that these soldiers have killed higher honour troops.
Hope this helps.

I read it somewhere that the legendary event occurs whenever an individual soldier's honor was raised by three in a particular battle AND SURVIVED.
Given that, I think there are some clarifications to make:
1) Killing a daimyo will most definitely brings the event. As killing a general will give the slayer an extra boost in honor, especially so when the fallen foe is a daimyo.
2) Otherwise make sure that ONE soldier killed a lot and survived.
3) However, killing routed enemy probably won't count! As it's long suspected that killing fleeing enemies won't be as rewarding (in terms of gaining honor) as doing the battle up front.
4) Again, someone proposed that the actual honor gain works the same way as general's gaining rank.
i.e. (2^(enemy's honor - soldier's own honor )) * number of slain enemy = virtual kill point (VKP).
Now, 1 full VKP gives 1 honor boost.
2 full VKP = 2 honor boost
4 Full VKP = 3 honor boost.
Thus: suppose we have one Yari cavalry (honor 1), who slew a Daimyo whose INDIVIDUAL honor was 5. Then we see that it's like (2^4)*1, or 16 full VKP.
On the other hand, suppose an honor 3 HC killing 8 honor 0 soldiers. Then it's only counted as one full VKP, thus the soldier can only gain one honor boost.

Five Honour 0 units fought two Honour 2 Units on custom.
All the Honour 0 men who lived and had killed one person where rank 2.
All the Honour 0 men who lived and had killed two people where rank 3.
Many of the Honour 2 men who killed one or two opponents stayed at rank 2. I speculate that the ones who did increase in rank killed a freshly minted rank 2 opponent (rank 0 killed rank 2 went to rank 2, then killed by one of the original rank 2 comrades).
I believe it is a binary formula where going up one rank takes;
2^(current rank) honour kills [hk].
Routing opponents = 0 honour
Honour Kill rating of an opponent = 2^(honour rank)
So a rank 0 opponent is worth one hk.
And a rank 2 opponent is worth 4 hks.
To get to rank 1 from rank 0 takes one hk.
To get to rank 2 from rank 1 takes two hks.
To get to rank 3 from rank 2 takes four hks.
So if you kill someone of higher honour who is not routing you will go to their rank.
If you kill someone of equal rank you will go up one rank.
Daimyo are honour rank 5. So kill one and you will progress to at least rank 5.
Generals are sometimes rank 3. So if they die they will trigger the legendary swordsmen event (assuming their killer survives)
