Try Greece and Rome at War by Peter Connolly. It's got everything you asked for and more, Connolly is an excellent author/illustrator and he knows his history. For reference Connolly is the man who reconstructed the Roman saddle, as well as testing numerous pieces of Classical equipment to see how it worked.

Take a look at this thread (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=3;t=9167) for plenty of Roman (and other) books.

I just ordered that book for £25 plus free delivery aarfter reading this review it sounded absoultley great, they person wasnt lyeing about anything was he http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

This book summarizes almost a millenium of warfare, not only in words but also with a large number of the authors own excellent paintings. The development of all instruments of war ranging from arrows to battleships, military organisation, tactics of battle, fortifications and siege techniques (not only of the two empires themselves but also of their adversaries) is covered. The battles covered by the book are illustrated with photographs of topographic models of the battlefield as well as photographs from the actual site as it looks today. This book sets standards for what books on history should be like. Strongly recommended.

hope i havent just wasted 25 quid http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

That review is an understatement The reviewer forgot to mention the numerous high quality and very accurate illustrations by the author, they really gel together his reviews of dress and equipment. This author is supposed to be working on a book covering Caesar's campaigns, with every single thing you could want to know in it. I've been hearing about him working on Caesar for years so the project is a long haul.

Peter Connolly has some other books on the ancient world but many of them are considered children’s books because they are rather short. He's got a two parter on Trajan's Dacian campaign (The Legionary and The Cavalryman), a book on Pompeii (called Pompeii for some strange reason ), a book on Mycenaean Greece (The Ancient Greece of Odysseus), one on the Holy Land in Roman times (The Holy Land), a book on Roman forts (The Roman Fort) and a book on Athens and Rome (The Ancient City). All of these books are quite short (sub 100 pages, except The Ancient City which is close to Greece and Rome in length and depth) but they are highly readable and very interesting, even after years of reading them. Greece and Rome at War is his masterwork, I only wish he would finish Caesar already

I consider Connolly to be one of the major authorities on the Classical world, a view shared by many others, so he must be good http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
