Call me strange if you like but I don't really like battles with Thousands of men in them, I like the smaller ones where you have a few skilled troups.
There was one battle, a river province where I was attacked by lots of people at once. I had three units of archers and one unit of 13 honour 3 spearmen. These people held that bridge all day, I was so proud. and the spears only lost two men. And were honour 5 afterwards.
I don't really know why I like these smaller battles either because it doesn't bother me if I am outnumbered a lot, I just prefer it if my troops are small in number.
It could be because I am no good at controlling lots of troops. This may be the case after thinking about it, because my tactic when I have lots of men is to charge!
Bugger I have answered my own question.

Yes I agree I like very small battles too especially in those first 5 seasons of SP Campaign, I cant seem to get enough of that initial tentative stage where its make or break??

The thing I hate most of all are battles involving reinforcements. Too bloody long, and I always lose because I forget about the reinforcements. I always chase the routers and then get rushed by a fresh Heavy Cav just appearing over the horizon. =X It's easy enough to defend against that when you remember you need to, but I rarely do. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

I much prefer the somewhat-smaller battles, mostly because I like to micromanage and that's hard to do with 16 units.

You mean... you DON'T just select all your men and double-click on the enemy general?!?

Hehehe. Vanya, you try too hard sometimes. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

Although I still haven't figured out if that Arq Wedgie thing is a joke or not. =X

I enjoy the fun from micromanagement. And the smaller the unit size, the more control you have.

When I play WE, I like to play the 60 men setting(for micromanagement), and imagine that I am controlling 10 times as many men(for more "historical" feel). I.E, if I am fighting a battle 500 vs 2000, I suppose it should be 5000 vs 20,000. That's more "historically accurate" in my mind.

Hope you are following this.

IMO, the bigger the better. This game really shines when the hills are covered with 120 man units.

I love reinforcements battles. The point is to make your enemy run the first time. Find a high spot near the routing point of the enemt and wait for bad guys to come in. Place projectile troops on a high place there and your men on top. Reinforcements will attack you even if you are the attacker if you are near their side. Many times reinforcements are wm and other units which are no match against projectile fire. Also your men while tired have a height advantage. Anyway beating the AI is very easy but in single bridge assults.

Don't use only honour, use theforce, too.

True. I used to be lazy that I only chase the routing troops with cavalry. Now it makes more sense to bring those slow moving projectile troops forward as well, they won't catch a thing, but can be useful later on.

theforce: Thing is, my reinforcement battles almost always occur on bridges. =X Which means that I only have a few of my units across because of the bottleneck, and then the enemy usually appears FROM the high ground, so if I were there, I'd just be suddenly overwhelmed. Oof.

If you set your men into long lines but like 3 or 4 wide they will get accross the bridge very quickly. I always set up my troops this way on bridges...looks like a bunch of lines of ants going to eat their meal! LOL Of course my missle troops are set two or three deep and very wide.
In sp I try to get those pesky bridge maps as soon as possible because I know I can defend them way better than the ai.
I enjoy the little battles but I like the great big ones too.....

I like playing with small armies sometimes but with a powerful computer, sometimes you just HAVE to have an enourmous battle with a few thousand troops on the map at once http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Aye, I prefer small battles too- I have a weird battle technique, I build up a very strong front, then send out elite Geishas and Ninjas to kill all the enemy Daimyos and any general who looks at me funny :P. I then send a large army to simply make all the pitiful rebels run, but don't actually use it to fight as the CPU are ALWAYS too cowardly to stand their ground, then, when they are all in a corner, I send in either battlefield ninjas, kensai or warrior monks. And while i'm just assasinating like crazy, I make sure that all my peeps are max honour weapon and armour. Nothing quite like seeing an elite Kensai hack 500 men to pieces, a squad of battlefield ninjas ambushing a huge army of archers and shredding them, or some warrior monks carving a path through armies of yashigaru. I only tend to have large armies in historical campaigns, because i'm not so good at handling lots of fights at once, and I seem to lose track of men and things. But large battles are fun, even if I do find them hard.
