View Full Version : Honor Upgrades
I have recently started playing Shogun online and it is a great deal of fun, more org patrons should join in (stupid crappy sequel).
One of my major concerns in multiplayer is to what extent I should upgrade my soldiers’ honor and weapons/armor. If I do not upgrade enough they will loose in a straight up fight, but upgrading too much wastes money that could be spent buying other things.
What are some strategies used by players here? If given the option, do you upgrade a select number of units to high honor for a special punch or upgrade al units honor equally across the board so that there are many mediocre units? What is a good general rule?

Well im more of a H2H player myself, but for the muskies I would either upgrade all of them to H3 or just plump 'em up with some armour upgrades. For archers i wouldnt even bother upgrading them, just lower them down to 0 everything, they act as a kind of harraser on the flanks (dont put them on the flanks if there are enemy CA harrasing you).
The H2H (hand to hand combat) units are where you need to concentrate most of your honour, No dachi are excellent with some wep upgrades and at least H5, they can instantly rout an enemy if the charge is timed well.
When it comes to Yari sams I tend to have them at H6, they pack a very powerful punch, edging close to Super Ashis. Alternatively if you are having them on H5, so you can put more Honour on lets say your cavs, then try and give them a weapons bonus or they will rout quite fast.
Ok well heres a summary for patch 1.02, try and keep all your H2H above H5, if you decide to use naginata or warrior monks, H4 might be sufficient. Dont raise your honour for muskies above H3 or H4, there is generally hardly any difference between H3 and H5. Woops and i totally forgot about cavs, dont raise your cavs above H4, its a total waste, once you have skill with cavs you can use them effectvely for flanking and rear attacking, for which they need hardly any honour. So id say get their honour to H3 or H4, or if you are going to use cavs for the purpose of rushing and flanking set them at H2.
Patch 1.03 is a different matter for koku, but you wont have played with that yet so I or someone else can go into that at another time.
Hope that helped.

Hi respete http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif
I've played with you the past couple of days and second everything TenkiSoratoti has said.
Looking at the logfiles from the battles I've fought with you I have a couple of other things too add.
Your taisho was in an Hon4W1A1 Heavy cav, that protected him well but you spent almost a fifth of your koku on only one unit. Honor 3 heavy cav should be about enough, as the Heavy cav are a powerful enough unit without upgrades
You spent 400 koku giving weopon upgrades to your muskets. That's 400 koku wasted, since Weopon upgrades only affect h2h, they won't make the muskets more effective in range fight.
You used hon 3 cav arch, I personally prefer hon 0 cav arch because it is really just as usefull in the ranged fight, the only problem is it routes easier. You would save 800 koku downgrading these.
Overall that would free up 2100 koku http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif for you to spend upgrading your H2H units, esp. your Yari sam since those were only hon 3.
You mention last night that your army routed very quickly, this was probably because of the low honor Yari sam routing and then causing a morale penalty for rest of army.

Yip, understand the difference between a Harrasser and a full metal jacket h2h or missile unit. Harrassers (CA and archers generally) need hardly any honour.
