Lord of The Rings MOD is going to be the bets ever created modification of MTW, or isn't it? IMO it is and I know there are a lot more people waiting for this mod. I can't wait to see my armies fighting in Rohan or mordor. Duke John started a big project and it takes time to make it work - but how long will it take?

I think that making LoTR mod will only make MTW better , not ruin it. And I cant wait to see this mod working.

Don't mistake me for being a fanatic LotR fan. I'm just someone who enjoys making graphics. It happened to be LotR but still I feel a bit hurt if someone says that MTW is screwed by having a LotR mod.
There really are alot of fantasy fans out there who are dying for a true wargame. Up to date there are only RTS games and they're not even close to being a wargame. But this LotR mod is IMO actually making alot of dreams come true.
We all were very glad that MTW or Shogun finally made it possible to recreate historical large scale battles in a relative realistic way. And now our team is bringing this kind of play to the world of Tolkien which is in my eyes one of the most original and thought out. At the moment it's all a bit hyped, but that doesn't stop me from having a great time; playing and drawing.
But I find comfort in that my first Uruk-Hai unit has already been downloaded over 400 times and I've improved my graphical abilities alot since, so there might be coming an interesting time for the community.
Cheers, Duke John

I think LOTR mod would definitely be cool. Just think of the Two Towers movie during the siege of Helm's Deep. Now imagine that you control the defenders/attackers GREAT FUN http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif
My kudos go to you Duke John, good luck on the project and i cant wait to play it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
This LotR mod is going to be phenominal. It will in no way detract from the current game at all. Duke John has put in a great effort and just from looking at the screenshots I am really awed. Well personally I liked the idea for a starwars mod http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif this is cool too
IMHO:
I see few downsides and many upsides to a LOTR mod
Downside (for the medieval fanatics):
- There might be discussions on these boards on the LOTR-mod, which the medieval fanatics will have to endure.
Uhm, can't think of others at the moment.
Upsides:
- People will get more entertainment from the game. (oooo, sounds awful, that one, doesn't it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif )
- It might attract more players to the game => more income for CA and Activision => more resources to support the game and/or develop new TW-games/add-ons.
- It might bring focus to areas that if improved will allow TW to be more easily moddable (since it is so different from the normal, historical setting), which in turn will make it easier for history buffs to recreate whatever battle/conflict in whatever time period they want.
- The people making it are probably enjoying it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
In short, when people do stuff like this, they should be applauded, not put down, so good luck on your project, Duke, looking forward to seeing the results of it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Regards,
Rafiki

And this is why so many people are waiting for your MOD Duke John - your team is doing really good job http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif and there's no way it can be unnoticed. BTW when do you think beta will be available? Or maybe somebody else can tell me?
thanks anyway
the mod will be a good game, but, i have a feeling that it is a bit limited in tech trees and unit wise, so that would come at a small concern...
but, it the mod will be excellent

I don't think you will have to worry much about LotR topics ruining the Org. Martyr has already bought a domain and we will have our own forums, so don't be afraid we will clutter the boards here. Although I can't see why you're bothered with LotR topics as long they're decent. And after all you don't have to look at all the topics.
We will indeed limit the techtree, but we do that with a reason. Just look at your own campaigns. You try to get as fast as possible to the best units. Why pick Spearmen when you have Chilvaric Sergeants? In the end you have lots of good troops while the AI is stuck with a mix.
And in MP people always pick the best units, so why should we make the effort of making units that no one will care about?
And besides it's much easier to balance the factions with 10+ units each.

Small number of unit types will certainly help to balance each faction. But as far as I know, almost all of the units are exclusive so the problem can be only with the number of factions available - can somebody tell how many factions there will be in that LoTR MOD?

We are working hard on it, the first release should be within a few weeks. It will be a set of Historical battles between rohan and Isengard.
We are all doing this as a hobby, with 'real lives to fit in here and there, so please guys be patient.
We are not totally cemented yet, but there should be around 6 or 7 factions. Each with their own entirely unique tech trees, units etc.. and each providing the player a with different challenges and a different type of gameplay, both in the Campaign and on the battlefield.
I feel similar to DJ about certain people knocking our mod. Frankly, if you dont like it, dont download it, make a better one and realise that people have put a hell of a lot of time, love, effort and imagination into this.
If any of you well wishers want to help out, and can offer any 9much needed) assistance, then drop into the forum. (link in my sig). Please dont just post crap in their, if you want to help, then you are VERY welcome.

And just to add my twopence, the people working on this mod are doing some pretty interesting stuff, coming up with very innovative ideas and creating solutions within the confines of the MTW engine.
A lot of people are learning a hell of a lot due to participation in this mod and I can guarentee that, over the course of the various LoTR releases (as more stuff gets completed), you are going to see some pretty neat stuff ...

Will the Ents save the day? What sort of tech for those I wonder http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
_Martyr_
08-17-2003, 03:40
Ents are not decided on yet. They may well be in the later releases, but for now we are all focusing on the more vital aspects of the mod, such as Gondorian units, and Mordor orcs etc... Rather than Ents who, if they are included, may well be an unplayable force lingering in fangorn, presenting an evil player with one last hurdle before total victory.
As far as I can tell right now, the Ents wont be in the first release. however, maybe DJ has something hidden up his sleaves??? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif (this one time I doubt it) http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

No the first BETA release wil be made for MTW 1.1. It will probably will followed quickly by a VI version.
Cheers, Duke John
since I'm quite a new member and can't participate in any discussions in the dungeon, I'll just put my few questions in here:
1) What's the status of the campaign map?
2) I reckon you include your own imaginations for the tech-tree (as far as I know, Tolkien didn't include much of that, did he?)
3) Do you need someone who makes an un/installer for your mod (I could, if you send me the files and instructions ^^)?
That would it be for now, if I have any more stuff, I'm gonna post it here

I was wondering about few things:
-what about immortality of elven leaders, and what about elven heir (will there be any and if yes what would be their maturing age)
-another thing is about Saruman (what about this character, is it going to be a separate unit and what about his ?heirs? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/dizzy.gif )
-finally I want to ask about Sauron, because since he cannot be killed and has no phisical form, how is it going to be done ?????
thanks for any answers

I appreciate your interest but you such in-depth questions can't be answered at the moment. The first BETA will contain Rohan and Isengard armies and that's exactly how far we are at the moment. We're discussing alot in our developer forum, to see our progress, click here (www.leftzed.com/forum). I must say that if you wish to post something please read everything beforehand. This save us alot of time repeating answers again and again.
There's a chit-chat subforum which allows more freedom in posting.

I'm just a bog fan of what your team is doing.
And I really try to follow all new info considering your MOD.
Have you thought about making Sauron a kind of pope who could have no heir, but after dying in battle another sauron would appear as long as mordor has some provinces.
Also this pope-like Sauron could excommunicate those evil factions if they attack him or fight among each other.
