How many times it was that I tried to kill enemy king on the battlefield and (if he had more than 6 stars) it was almost imposible http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/shock.gif The only way one can kill such a king is to shoot him.
But why is it so - can somebody explain me why can I shoot such king (or general) but not kill him in melee?
thanks for any posts
Yes it is hard to kill a king in MTW i agree perhaps a little too hard.
But this does make it nice and theatrical when the king is alone fighting for his life. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/shock.gif
On hard & very hard it takes ages to kill the king.
With certain units the king and generals die very fast. Try armour piercing units such as Jannisary heavy inf, militia ser and billmen. But my personal fav and this really works is to use dismounted royal knights (dismount when you position at start, by right click) they massacre anything on horseback e.g other royal knights. The enemy king will last about 10 seconds trust me http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

yep Units that have a strong attack against mounted armoured units are the best to use... Billmen and Heavy Jannissaries are suited for this task and are very good at it.
Spearmen will wear the King Down with their bonus defending against Cav, but it really takes time to do.
As has been said the best way to take out those High Command, High Valor, Great Warriors is to shoot them down... its good to keep some Horse Archers or some similar unit around for this.
You'll find a good discusion about these things in the Main Hall by following this link (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=7;t=9867).

I know that billmen or units like that can handle cavalary but IMO the best way to kill powerful king or general is to shoot him down. But I certainly have to try that trick with dismounted royal knights - thanks for that idea http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Kings get tough the same way your units do. High valour from many battles; high number of stars-battles and sometimes good luck, or Byzantine http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif ; V&V's adding to health, valour and command.
To repeat my favourite story: a depleted Byz command unit (king actually) accounted for over 450 of my 900 losses in a single battle; he was killed as he walked all alone back to his edge of the battlefield, by a fresh unit of horse archers that stayed out of melee.

Well, I think that kings get tough much easier than other units and cannot be caompared to any other unit. This is because of their ability to retrain/rebuild themselves.....
I remember one time i was going to kill the english king, he escaped me in a previus battle and only he was alive, so i send in 1500 saracen on him, plus 4 star gen.
that was my most expensive win i ever had. the king took near 500 of them before he fell
afterward i felt sorry for him, i should have withdrawn my men, he was a very worthy and honorable enemy

Honarable enemy still remains enemy http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif and therefore has to be eliminated http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif

Your king is also capable of the same heroics but wont be offered the chivalrous gesture so kill him while you can Or better yet take him prisoner, though I have never managed this myself.
I believe i read in a different post that if you execute your prisoners after taking the king hostage he is then ransomed for oodles of money (if he has heirs). I did this as the HRE and ransomed the king of poland for 12000 + florins I'm not sure if this is the case all the time since I did it as the italians and captured the pope then executed him, and when i got back to the camp. map it said he was simply 'take care' of, and no ransom...but that was when i took rome so there was no one to pay for him http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I recently captured the Sicilian king and got a fat ransome bag in return. Later he came back for more and I expected tomake him my money cow again, but he decided to play catcher to a boulder from one of my cats and got squashed on the ground. There goes my xmas bonus I said http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
His kid seems more cautiouns and has not even glanced my way.
But most of the time I execute royal prisoners.

A King's Ransom is not just an expression. In this game you hope that you are able to capture rather than kill the enemy king. It is typically worth about 10,000 florins and heirs seem to be worth a couple thousand.

Well it's true that killing enemy leader is not always the best option ,but total domination requires such steps. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif

My policy is to always kill the King if I capture him. I want to destroy their whole family.
Then again my policy is to execute everyone 100% of the time.
But, I always let ONE man be captured and ransomed back. So he can tell the tale of course. When I'm mopping up I hit the execute button a lot of times until they only have a few stragglers and then I capture one more. He gets to survive haha.
Well I did manage once to capture the great Khan because I made him a good runner from a previous battle, but shorlty after capture there routing armies started coming back at me and in threat of losing I executed all the prisoners. Dummies if ya wanted the great Khan back you should not have threatened my victory and since there was no heir they became rebels with muku troops
For realisms sake its always a good idea to ransom back the nobles.... as historically it pretty much happened 100% of the time ... probably down to the what if i get captured by them next time way of thinking.....
nah the sound of them executions is just too damn tempting http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif so ignore what ive just said http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif
