1. The first video is about 6-7 minuites, and it covers all the controls of a Rome: Total War battlefield. The Romans form a tortoise formation and charge against some celtic soldiers. We see full coverage of the battle, and and even Stonehenge is on the battlefield. A class film.
2. This shows some different buildings in a Roman city such as a coliseum and city walls. Some Roman soldiers assault the city, another class video showing a full range of useful instructions.
3. This shows the whole campaign map in R:TW, and you see the transition from Campaign map to battle field.

Anyone downloaded the preview that was provided? It's about 2 seconds long and rubbish, but it does show some menu screens and has sated my desire for the full vids for about 10 minutes.
Its very short, but you can see the battle map pretty clearerly. Run it in 0.5X playing speed if zou have a speed slider on your vid program.

Just put them on bittorrent. Download will be fast because everyone will be uploading the file

Pardon my French but at this point no amount of historical inaccuracy or men walking n'sync would convince me not to purchase this almighty piece of beauty.

Hear, hear, Monk
Now i think i'm going to have to say it, because my euphoria is overwhelming at this point. Despite all the doomsday prophecies of all these interviews, I really do think that a December 2003/Early 2004 release date is still a high possibility.
Of course i don't really care about the release date so much as the demo release date. Good lord, i'm going to play that demo for approximately 29 hours straight.
It's out, they're just not telling you regular people yet.
No, I think its going to be Spring '04. I can wait, I have plenty of gaming goodness aside from Rome.

Am I really the only onse that thinks the siege is the best one?
I'm surprised that the horses walk in sync while the legionaries in Testudo doe not. That testudo looks damn cool Shufling and all movements ripling down the ranks.
Yes I did notice that. Maybe because its a special ability? (testudo) But I hope they can make that for normal walking too.

Great video's To bad you can't read the words in the strat map movie.
I love the way those soldiers go into testudo formation. It looks so kewl. The siege vid was indeed the best one. Those cities look marvelous. I'm also happy you got siege towers now. One thing I didn't like was the inactivity of the macedonians (black ones). During the assault I think I didn't see a single roman fall... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif However there were very few macedonians on the walls so that might have been the cause of it. That makes me wonder how hard it will be to defend a city. Those walls looked very long and judging by the macedonian forces, there weren't enough of them to man the entire length of the walls...
I really like the new battle screen and the animation of the giant legionaire atacking the egyptian. I figured from looking at the vid that the armies moving on the strat map have a certain arc where they can move too. Since the roman army was in the desert he couldn't attack very far. But maybe if he would have been on a road, he might even have made it to judea. But this ofcourse, is only guessing.
One more oddity I saw was that those tails of the roman horses have to much homogenious movements. All the tails of the entire regiment move at the same time up and down, which makes them look more like machines, than animals. Hope they change that, because all other movements of the regiments look incredible (have you seen them wheel, it's fantastic!http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Are these videos going to get on a site you don't have to register to look at? Also why hasn't the org got any 'specials' like this, after all it's the number 1 total war fan site and you'd think it would get first dibs (but then you'd expect most of the good RTW announcements and screenies to be in the English publications rather than German ones). You'd definitely expect the official site to get something, but outside of the new units and building profiles it been rather quiet, it just sends you to other sites (some of which charge for anything good) rather than hosting the good stuff itself. Most other companies have plenty of game footage and screen shots on their own sites and they give the juicy press releases to their own country. The whole RTW hype engine seems to be slightly off target http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif
Its perfectly on target. There are more German gamers than there are British gamers. CA is very aware that nationalism is not always good business. It makes perfect business sense to follow the marketing strategy they have at the moment. German magazines are very well known in Germany and surrounding areas, and cover far more subscribers than mags in the UK. It would be very unwise, if CA were to give the information to a UK mag which has not even half the circulation of Gamestar. Circulation aside so called less known mags will pay for exclusive rights, if you negociate correctly.
The best marketing is when the consumer markets your product by praising it and hyping the product for you. Although the org is the largest fan forum, apart from the .com, there is a large TW gaming community outside the org. This is something which I have been aware of since I first heard the overstatement "the org is the TW community". Ever since I have argued that the org is not the online community. To me this has always been obvious as the non-native-English speaking gamers far outnumber native English speaking gamers. However the native English speakers are very vocal on the English forums, naturally this is to be expected.
Monopoly is almost never a good thing, and personally I know very well how hard the small fish fight for room in the pond. I work in marketing for a small company surrounded by giants. The smaller fish will fight and pursue their interest very fiercely, that is their only hope of survival. So it comes as not much of a surprise when Paul's site gets the scoop on this one.
To me this is evidence that competition is a very good thing. Although I am sure that Paul had a lot of luck in getting this scoop, and he still has to show is otherwise by getting the demo first. There is also another open secret: if you build a great fan site most game companies will allow you the scoop. It is best for them and their product that there are more fansites. Some companies even go so far as to covertly or overtly finance fansites themselves
Lastly the recent changes at the org could not have been possible without the .net being up. This is pretty evident is the speedy creation of the new forums and of the obvious lessons learnt from the .net episode.
I love your writeups FBE. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pat.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

Interesting piece SeljukSinan, it seems to fit very nicely under the heading 'life is strange don't try to understand it just live it'. You made some good points about the size of the German gaming scene (although most of what you hear about it in the UK is on the censorship and green blood )
One of the things that throws the perception of the English/non-English gamer numbers is the fact that so many of the non-English gamers on sites like this speak (type) excellent English. If someone doesn't say that they are not from one of the English speaking countries they are assumed to be a native. I'm not sure whether that's a comment on your language skills or on our egos I don't mind that some announcements go to the foreign press, it's more like I expected us to get something, most of the information released in English (either American or British) has been regurgitating foreign language releases, but months later. The few exceptions to this have not contained anything really interesting (for example Edge's release date which sent a wail around the world and is probably going to be wrong). When I go through town again I'll take a look at PC Zone and see if that's got anything better.
Perhaps its just dislike of the fact that my natural language has been relegated to second or third place without even a consolation prize. You see we English speakers are always told how wonderfully versatile out language is, how a quarter of the world speaks it and how it will be the leading candidate for a global language. Until now most of these game previews have been in English so they reach America, there's no market bigger than the USA (except maybe Japan, it depends on the kind of games being sold). We aren't used to being told that another language can do a better job, and honestly that takes some getting used to. Maybe it would be easier if we weren't talking about RTW
Perhaps the worst thing about the English language is that you can easily get English the nation confused with English the language (considering that it's such a versatile language you'd think they'd do something about this). When I said I thought there would be more information in English I meant the language rather than the country. Sites like IGN and Gamespot (both of which charge for good stuff, blergh) often pick up these kind of releases, but so far Gamestar has been leading the pack (and doing a fine job of it, I think - I only did two years of German at secondary school several years ago) I still think the official site needs to step it up a little and show the game off more.
What is this '.net episode' you mentioned? I don't recall hearing it mentioned before.
There's enough brackets in this post to sink a ship Sorry.

Yes there are.
in the first Vid the Barbarians charge Roman lines, and by the time the battle is over the Barb force is whipped out, we see Roman legions advancing passed the bodies of their enemies. (and let me say...theres a lot of dead bodies http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif )

Froggy
'life is strange don't try to understand it just live it' -that is exactly the opposite of my life philosophy. I firmly believe in life_is_great_live_it_understand_it..among others... I did understand your post very well. What I attempted was not to rationalize and explain away the reasons for why non-English publications do have a significant weight in the world. You are perfectly justified in your point of view. What I tried to do, as I am sure you noted, was to explain why I think the non-English press is getting the scoops.
It's true that non-native English speakers make their presence more subtle because they, very broadly speaking, do converse well in written English. however, my main point was that these people are not usually seen at the org, but they do read non-English media, and they do frequent non English forums which most at the org have never heard of. I think that says something of the ego of the English speakers. I myself being born in an ex-British colony, thought that English has the main say in the world. To some degree it certainly does. Smart companies will sell their marketing information to those who pay the highest bidder, and who have the greatest chance of converging into their marketing strategy.
This is the Darwinism-Capitalism of the modern business world. Not that I appreciate it, which I don't. But it is there and it's there to stay for the foreseeable future.
After watching those vids it's apparent to me that CA are aiming for a much larger market than they aimed for with STW or MTW. They really want RTW to appeal to a broader audience, e.g. all those who did not give up CIV3 for MTW...and others. If they wish to achieve this objective then they must make sure that their product gets the spotlight not just in the English (speaking) press but in all the other languages of their target market. I play America's Army pretty often. It's a kind of Army "simulation". After a few times on the same server I usually pop the question: "So where you soldiers from ?"
Answers are along these lines (last time I asked tonight):
1. Germany
2. Sweden
3. Pakistan http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
4. Germany
5. Germany
6. Germany
7. UK
8. USA
9. USA
10. France
11. USA
12. USA
13. USA
14. Israel
15. Pakistan
16. USA
and so forth.....point is that it is an American game. Heavily glorified presentation of the powerful values of America. Yet a very large minority of the peeps playing this game is non-native English in character
And this is on America's Army, probably one of the most idelogy-ized games around. On some servers, you hear more German and Scandinavian languages than you hear English. If you try some other more popular games, like Raven Shield you will see that this large minority just gets bigger. Now of course the US has the highest percentage of gamers per capita than anywhere else, but how does this add up when you combine all of the non-English speaking world ? That is a question that CA marketers must have asked, and their answer is apparent in their marketing tactics. What we see is their main focus in Europe, but they must and do have their strategies for other markets, like e.g. Japan.
Again I do not try to downplay anything, but to explain why I think they take this path (if they are involved at all).
I'd recommend that they continue to "leak" information on RTW. This makes it exclusive "classified" and increases the anticipation for game release. it increases the word of mouth marketing. WOMM does not cost a cent and increases influence on consumer behaviour, and raises the bar for revenues. Closer to actual game release I'd expect a lot more "official" news on the established English (speaking) and non-English media.

I wonder why Stormer hasn't made an announcement for the movies on the Org home page. Maybe the Org is loathe to send people to another site to get videos, but i sincerely doubt that any site with be able to trump the Org as the #1 fan site for TW. Unless other sites keep getting movies of this quality...

Any of you guys ever played Operation Flashpoint online?
It's actually a rarity to find an "English speaking server"
Usually all the English speakers have to ask
"ANYONE speak English here?????"
Its pretty funny, especially in such a teamwork oriented game to have no idea what is going on.
Can somebody post some pictures from these videos? My modem doesn't like such big videos http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif .
