n00b question

Me and my friend both have this game, and we want to play via LAN. But the thing is, we dont know how. we cant click the join button and enter an IP or anything, so we dont know how we can join eachother's games... and it doesnt show up on the list...

Both machines would have to be connected by a network (LAN = Local Area Network) for this to work. I presume that this isn't the case?
