View Full Version : The stupid difficulty rating...

Well.... my main gripe is with the Egyptians and Turks in early..... the game says the Egyptians are easy while the Turks are hard.... it's like the other way around

I beat the crap out of the Byzantians and later the Egyptian easily with the turks in early... because neither have sufficient calvary that can catch your turcomen ... you could easily beat the crap out of them with your tucomen horse running them around and exausting them and then send in the rest of your stuff for the kill.... Your starting province are pretty good... Syria can attack a ton of Egyptians province which will force the Egyptian to hold a long border..... Rum has a relatively decent build up (as the turks you can build some pretty good troops with a low build up anyway) and Armenia of course get you the added valor AHC (which is pretty good until you start to face CK)

While it's the opposite for the Egyptians... the Turks can strike at many of their vital provinces from Syria... you have a horribily low build up early on... with only Egypt being able to pump troops (and only beodians and nubian....) while you have a very long border and few troops..... you are also facing the Turks, the Almos and the Byz... all 3 just happen to be the best early faction ....

Your Coastal province are mostly very rich but also very Crusade attracting... which will also mean you'll be at war with the Italians a lot which will seriously limit yoru trade capability......

it takes you a while just to build up to Saharan cav.... (at least 4 turn... that's considering you don't build anything else in Egypt... fat chance...) before that you have abosalutely nothing that can deal with the horse archer hoard of the turks... you have to hide on hills and forest and let them exaust their ammo.... if you charge a unit it's as good as gone usually being ganed up and fired upon from all side by horse archer then knocked dead by AHC....

I only manage to kill the turks by building a inn in Arabia ASAP and hire a ton of merc and hit them unsuspectingly in syria... and then had to use even more mercs to weather several huge counter attack... meanwhile slowly building up so I can acturally build real units....

Luckily the ALmos also start with a tiny garrison in teh east and I can focus on the turks... and the Byzantians honored our alliance and didn't drive down the middile east with their powerful army...

And this was suppose to be easy HAH.....

THe Danes are also one funny faction... it can either be incrediablly easy or incrediablly hard to play them... if you try to take on the HRE its' probably one of the hardest campign in the game... but if you just take scandanavia and build up boats it can be really really easy (huge income and small garrison.... )

I'm playing this as Egyptians right now, Early, Expert. I'm not having any trouble. I built a mess of units and attacked the Turks ASAP. It didn't take long to annihilate them.

After that I took out the Almo's (before they had much in the way of AUM.) Then I took on the Byzantines and have successfully pushed them out of Constantinople, Greece, Serbia, and Asia Minor. Next target will be either Spain or Hungary for the weapon upgrade provinces.

I've had the most fun playing as the Turks (early, expert http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif the first time playing as expert) anyhow, it definitely didn't feel 'hard' like it says in the intro, the Egyptians didn't really put up much of a fight, but I took them on pretty early and didn't allow them time to build up a force. The most trouble I've had is trying to maintain trading relationships. Right now the only two factions who aren't at war with me are the Spanish (4 provinces) and the Papacy (1 province). I have a huge army, but my recent war with the Sicilians have left my fleet a little ragged and have shortened my trading routes. The most surprising thing about this game is that the Danish are a major contender. They have a huge trading route that starts at Denmark and stops at southern Italy, I've never seen the AI ever have that kind of trade route crazy...just crazy...

anyhoo, a little off-topic, but has anyone ever seen that episode of 'Red Dwarf' where Rimmer is constantly talking about his old "Risk" games back at college? My post here really reminded me of that..

Rimmer (reading his old 'Risk' diary): Well, he rolled a 2 and a 3, I was still in it So I rolled a 6 and a 4, a 5 and a 2 and a 3 and a 6, I'd won

or however that went

I've had the opposite experience, so far. I found Turks on Expert to be impossible to win, got annihalated within 50 years, twice. Egypt, on the other hand, I found very easy due to it's protected geographic position in the corner of the map. The Turks were easy to wipe out, both as the Egyptians and the Turks. So I agree completely with the difficulty ratings here.

Its all about the strategy that you like to use that makes the difficulty a factor
