Since the original thread on this topic looks like old news to me, I was wondering if there was anything new to say about the patch and perhaps someone could clear up how making a patch works, as I find it mystifying why the 56-patch is taking so long to complete.

well, I would imagine they're fixing more than just the 56 year bug (they better be!http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif. And then that patch will have to be play tested.
However, if previous experience is anything to go by, campaigns saved in 2.0 will not work with the 2.1 patch. So if you've got a half played game and you're just hanging for that patch forget it...either finish the campaign now or be prepared to start a new one when 2.1 comes out.
Me, I'll be HRE, early.
My guess is that they could quickly patch the 56 year bug quickly but they would rather fix it all up and make everyone happy so they can throw all the patchwork in 1 nice bundle wich is more effective and more efficient

i suppose then, that creating a patch is a much more daunting challenge, than, say, making a mod? while i support creative assembly's work to the fullest (the atmosphere of this game is unparalled), i can't help but presume that a "quick-fix" patch, tailored to the 56-bug, is unavailable because it might present their products as being buggy, i.e., they have to do more than one patch on a game realeased by them. i, being a europa universalis II player, am totally fine with continuous patches, and see them not as a flaw, but as a sign of committment by the game manufacturer to keep both involved and aware of the desires of its consumers.

Support for EU is great (and it is my fave game after MTW)
but I would guess it is perhaps easier to patch? No fancy battles, historical list of kings etc

I'm sure the fix for the 56-bug is simple, but the testing may not be. Just look at how the 56-bug came about (most likely) - trying to fix the immortal general complaint. Here a "fix" created another bug. Since CA will most likely not get a shot at a second patch, they probably want to make sure what they do release does not create more problems than it fixes.
