View Full Version : Morons with rocks are dangerous

Is there any way to keep my moronic catapults from shooting? Once they've been given a target, they'll keep firing at it, even after I click the 'Fire at Will' to OFF.
I'd just broken my enemy's army and sent the cavalry in pursuit. My general, with his kataphract unit, got his head knocked off by these fools.
What really pains me is that I KNEW these fools were going to keep firing and, only seconds before, I'd considered ordering their withdrawal in order to avoid that possibility.
Anyone figured this one out yet? I'd love to hear it....
If they refuse to carry out the "cease fire" order. i do this:
-Control + W
-Halt
This works. the unit first starts to withdraw and then once the halt order is givem the men return to the artillery position and cease fire.

There is no need to withdraw them, I think.
Backspace is the key to cancel all previous orders for the selected unit.
A: toggle auto-fire
Backspace: cancel the firing order (when you toggle to auto-fire to OFF, the previous order, which is auto-fire http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif is still there, so you need to issue Backspace).
Annie
ps: this solution also works for any other missile units. If you withdraw then halt, other missile unit will face wrong way.

Seljuk, LadyAnn....
Thank you both
It's always embarassing when an old hand has to ask a 'How do you do this?' question, but, I prefer http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif from the pros to http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif at the program.
In actuality, I'm http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif , not http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/dizzy.gif ...., so, thanks for the http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pat.gif . http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

Also, if they were firing b4 you switched "fire at will" off they will continue firing. You have to give them the "Halt" command as well. Not sure if they will stop (after fire-at-will is turned off) after their present target is reduced to 0 and/or out of range.
Another quickie is to order them to fire at something out of range range. Then for the morons that they are try to figure out how thay are gonna launch that rock at those men out of range http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

Hopalong...
The 'Halt' doesn't stop them...remember, they're MORONS..hehe. Sometimes, the 'Halt' option is not even available. Maybe that's because they're reloading?
Oaty... It never occurred to me to give an order they could not carry out.... so, the plan is, confuse them because they're MORONS, right? hehehe
Well Annie http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
the reason why I offered the withdraw and then halt solution is, that Shai would not have asked the question if the normal halt command worked.
By throwing in another command the morons start doing something else than shoot, THEN the halt command works.
It's already happened to me, that I press HALT frantically but the 6 serpentine morons keep shooting at my Valor 6 Weapon 3 Sipahi. However if you put in another order like withdraw, then press halt they stop shooting. Also since it is immobile artillery they will be facing almost the saem way when they return to the artillery position.

Yeah, 'halt' alone often doesn`t work. Catapults can go on firing without even showing the 'firing'-icon on the unit tag. If this is the case, the 'halt'-button is grayed. Then withdraw and halt is the only way to stop them (that I know).
Alt left click on the biggest ugliest enemy unit you can see. That'll stop them playing with their big catapult outside school hours.
http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif Good one that will work, and if you wanna give em another chance just press halt right after they start chrging to their doom. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

'HALT' always works for me with catapults. Just make sure they are not on 'auto-fire' as well: i.e., if you press 'HALT' but the unit is on 'auto-fire' -- they'll still fire if anything is within their range. I'd recommend keeping 'auto-fire' off with catapults and just targeting them at selected enemy units. 'HALT' has never failed me in this case.

I've noticed that too: the animation still shows rocks flying around the field even if artillery has its firing icon off (even when the catapults are out of ammo).
I believe it's a programming bug but only a cosmetic one: I actually have never suffered any casualties because of these phantom flying rocks even when they seemingly hit my troops on the screen...

You shouldn't expect much of your troops if their king is a Giant Sandworm.

(Little inside name with the name Shai Hulud... nvm)
I've only ever given the "auto-fire" order to artillery once (it was a battery of 4 morters) and they promptly slaughtered everyone, including my army.
So now, I keep that option off.

Kats and Cats obviously don't go togehter very well. I just lost a 8-star to enemy cats.
I was so distraught when it happened. He had fought all the way across Africa and through Spain and was attacking the last Aragonese province of Spain. Along the way he'd picked up Skilled Attacker and Skilled Defender, he was my go-to guy.
The Aragonese lined up with 8 Cats, 2 Royal Knights, 2 Militia Sergeants, 2 Fuedal Sergeants and 2 Peasants. Their King was a 6-star. I took virtually no casualties until our lines met and then my general copped it almost immediately. Insta-Rout for the new units. Some of my Byz Inf was V4 by itself so they fought a rearguard action to slow down the Royals. The cats kept firing and killed their own King. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif Insta-Rout for them. I'd take it all back though if I could get my general back.
I'll be more careful attacking massed cats in the future.
One thing I do where there's artillery is to manaeuvre around to try and get the AI to leave it's artillery undefended while keeping my army out of range. Once they are at a decent distance, I send a unit of light cav to destroy the artillery and perhaps catch/kill some of the crews.
Peasants are useful too by charging a unit of them at the enemy line. His arty then starts targeting the peasants who are currently in melee and they usually score a few friendly-fire kills.

But fruit is OK.
At my University there was a yearly Tug-O-War followed by a massive foodfight. Law vs Engineering faculties. The leader of the Lawyers was El Cid and was the person most pounded in an insane charge from the previous year. The Engineers had a 2:1 advantage and a W/L of something like 86-1.
So my faculty (Science) joined the lawyers and made some seige weapons. Catapults and Jellyrubber Gings (Ballistas). They could fire fruit to 300 meters. It was funny to watch someone toppled by a banana flying at about mach 0.5 (or so it seemed), and had no idea where it had come from.

Vanya is mistaken. But Vanya hardly errs. So that's why I'm sure that whatever Vanya sez, still is law. "Exception proves the rule."

If the battle is won, get the SOBs out of there. If they are not on the battlefield they canst do no wrong. It pains me too that often the catapults do the most damage when I am chasing the fleeing foe... "Ok, once again - IF THE UNIFORMS MATCH YOURS, THEY ARE ON YOUR SIDE... NO THAT MEANS YOU DON'T KILL THEM"
