when ur fighting a battle i noticed smaller flags in a unit, in most units actually, what are they? i also noticed that the more valour a unit has the more wee flags it has. can anyone enlighten me on these?

You answered your own question. You are exactly correct, the number of flags the unit flies represents total valor of that unit. You could also check valor of units by pressing F1 during battle. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pat.gif
EDIT: Welcome to this great great forum......

ahhhh thanks.
i also noticed when i lost a battle, opps http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif , that the guys carrying the wee flags were the ones running away and i saved the replay a looked carefully and i dn't think they jumped from one man to another, so do u think the guys with the flags are the individuals with the highest valour?
it took me a while to register cause i got lots of error things and i got frustrated cause i was dying to ask. now i'm dying to go play VI...
thanks again

no prob jagmaster. I am always glad to help ppl.
As far as the wee flag carriers running away concerned, heres my theory (im not an expert in the game mechanics yet http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif )
Guys with more valor i think more likely to survive because valour adds to their attack/defense - hence they are the ones with highest ability to cut their way out of being surrounded etc. I think thats why they survive most battles, they are just tough to kill.
Speaking about being tough to kill, whn i was fighting Mongols (my 10000 vs theirs 14000) my crack varangian guards and mercenary halberdiers were down to like 10 men each but still took out units of Mongol heavy cavalry on their own.
As a hint, turn off Tidy up armies after battle and reorganize troops yourself (veterans with veterans) - makes for GREAT shock troosp later on (no diluting with green recruits). http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

i only turned that option off a few days ago after months of playing, silly me.
i've never had a totally amazing unit that can totally slaughter stuff left right and centre, that would be cool. well i once built up sweden to master metalsmith and armouer and those men were pretty mean, but had little valour.
i only got VI the other day and i started a SP playing the vikings, i put it on normal (i normally play on expert) so i could get used to it and its much easier to get men up in valour. so hopefully i'll get some really amazing units by the end of my first SP. i think i have some landmenn with a valour of 6, high for me. i seen once in a post here a person had a units valour upto 13. whats the highest u've seen?

Well i don't play VI because of the 56 year bug, but recently i have been tempted to install it (you can read about it in one of my threads) because i have experienced it in the regular MTW. Here's the thread http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin....;t=9995 (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=15;t=9995)
Yeah personal grooming of units is essential in my opinion, however i have always enjoyed micromanaging http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif I had some nasty units, as i mentioned, able to cut down hundreds of enemies in the battle
As far as valor goes, highest ive seen is 8. Thats partly due to the fact that i had an 8 star general (so 4 valor comes from the general). It's too bad that you cant tidy up mercenary armies in v1.1 - I use lots of mercs and i love them.
I have no idea how you would get up to 13 valor - sounds ridiculous to me. But i guess everything is possible eh?
I cant wait to figure out how to post pics on this web site, cuz im waiting to post my Mongol Horde experience (it was brutal).
Anyway, cheers m8.

Im trying to think how you could get 13 valor. Heres my calculations/ ramblings/etc.
Assume that you have an 8 star general (a piece of cake if you play Bizantium). So the unit receives 4 valor from him. So now we need to account for another 9 valor....
Say the said unit in question is Kataphraktoi. Constantinople gives +1 valor to them. If you have MAster Horse Breeder i think you get another 1 valor. So, if the said unit of Kats is produced in the heart of your empire then it comes out at valor 2. Ok 7 valor left to account for.....
I have seen units gain 3 valor in a single battle, yes thats right 3 valor (but they had isnane ammounts of kills or lots of kills of elite units). So i guess if you fight a few battles like that, and have a few units of KAts of same valor, you can combine them to make a truly fearsome 13 valor TANK. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I once had a byz prince with 15 in valour, thats the highest i ever seen, and he was 7 or 8 star gen cant remember.
i got one hobilar up to 10 in valour when he was attacking, then he got 8 stars and he was v0 when i started to use him with 1 star http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
and recently i got a viking berserker up to 9 in valour with a 8 star gen
but other then those times i have problem to get high valour on my units getting more 3-4 in valour, even if i put vets with vets.

Hi jagmaster. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif I'm glad to see you've found your voice in these forums.
The banners in STW that indicated the same thing were much more noticable and I paid more attention to how tough the units were I was fighter. With the smaller flags of MTW, I rarely notice them, though I know I should be paying attention to such details.

Yuo know Sigurd i havent noticed them for a long time either, it was my buddy who pointed out the little wee flag thing. Kind of useful actually.
If i see a charging unit have gizillion flags i may commit beter troops to stop them, etc. Well i just think its a nice touch.
Just imagine what an honour it must be to wear one of those flags for a soldier. They truly must be good warriors.

I have an idea, why dont you guys post the screenies of your highest valor units (or should we make a separate thread for that?). It would be cool to see how far you can get valor-wise.

It seems you have figured out how to post links to this site. It is not much different really.
You will have to find someone who can host your pictures (e.g. your own website) and link them in using the picture’s URL via the image option in the posting screen.
I don’t think you’ll be able to upload anything to this site (totalwar.org). At least that is how it was when I joined…
Here is an example; you can look at the tags using the quote link up in the right corner of this post…

thanks for the welcomes.
i think we should start a thread with highest valour in a unit and see what happens? (someone else start it, i'm new and scared ) http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif
i have viking huscarls up to 8 with a 9* general now.
Scott
I've gotten a unit of Woodsmen up to 13 valor before (Yes, woodsmen). He was also a 8* general after leading the Lithuanian forces in a campain to subdue those crazy mongols. Yeah.. With max armor/weapons upgrades, you didn't want to get this dude angry. He did have the Pride and Utterly fearless vice/virtue though.

No prob jagmaster. I shal start that thread right this moment. I think it would give us a good idea of how high a valor a unit can have (realistically speaking)

i think the flags add a wee bit of historic realism to the game too. i'm no expert in history, its mearly an interest but wouldn't a large unit or troops have sub units in it?
i doubt that was actually intended but i suppose its nice to use ur imagination.
Scott
And all this time I thought the A.I was cheating by having archers concentrate on all my high valour units

My highest valor I believe belonged to a Viking Prince. It was 21 at the point that I quit the campaign. For all I know it could have been higher.
He was one of those low loyalty guys that you send off to get killed in a battle vs a thousand guys. Well, he won that battle and was the only survivor. I sent him in an invasion against 400 spearmen the next year and he won.
It basically started a pattern of him being invincible and wiping out enemy armies singlehandedly. Eventually I formed the Misfits brigade led by him. Any tiny crusts of high valor surviving troops would join his army. The most men he ever had was about 20, all of them high valor survivors from a dozen broken units and they would routinely take on more than 1000 enemies and win. This is the ONLY time I've ever seen this insane Jedi-ness of a general get this bad. The reason for his high valor:
He became 9 stars/9 dread eventually with all of his Vice/Virtue slots filled up.
Natural Born Killer (+valor)
Blood Lover
Butcher
Secret Killer (+5 valor if I'm correct))
Utterly Fearless (+morale and valor?)
Charismatic
Pride (+ valor)
and then he had some command bonus vices but he had 9 stars even without them.
He was the greatest singular general I ever had - I never replaced the men in his unit of Viking Huscarles because I liked watching him wade through enemy troops and utterly obliterate them by himself.
But, as you can see with all those vices plus command stars plus just kicking ass that he got an insanely high amount of valor.
He DID eventually die, mostly because of my showboating. I could have put him in charge of a large army and he would have commanded them well and survived as well as kicked the crap out of tons of troops by himself. But, I was more interested in sending him against tougher and tougher opponents.
He eventually died in a battle that was him invading the Saxons.
It was 1 man vs 860
The enemy 860 included 2 units of Saxon Huscarles, the King, and his 4 sons. He died after killing around 450 of the enemy when he got peppered by hundreds of arrows at once.
The plus side: He ended up killing the enemy king and all their princes singlehandedly so their faction dissolved into rebels.
Okay, that was longwinded, but I did love that guy and I always regretted sending him to his death, but I have vowed never to reload when I make mistakes, no matter how dire. He died a true hero.
