They do rule actually. I think they are better than chivalric Sargents in all but armour. But I could be wrong. They really are the backbone of my Italian armies. These, men at arms and some mounted crossbows will kill anything in early.
Edit - Damnable extra letters and cursed lower case I's. I swear they slip in when you aren't looking.

They are slightly better than chiv-sgts. They have better melee and morale. The stats of Order Foot is the same.
Try them in High and Late Era.
Most players - I did so too - tend to start in early age, and before they develop all cool High/Late Era weaponry, they have already won the game.
Italian Infantry is great in Early Age, later on they are still good, but you will not win with them alone and so easily.
Another reason for trying High and Late Era: The AI has better developed provinces and provides usually a better fight than in Early Age.
Food for Thought, discover the mostly ignored later Eras http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Well that doesnt hurt the A.I. too much for me as most of my early era games end late in the high era for me as I try to play a game of medieval total peace, but of course after a few years of total peace, I get an invintation for medieval total war wich I have only one choice and I must accept. I go for the economical upgrades more than I go for the technical and militaristic upgrades. Of course my biggest gripe since I don't have wesmod is the faction that gets stuck with provence (I believe that is the right territory, its the one that gives plus 1 valour to peasants). So what does the A.I. do that has that province trains peasants out of there every single turn, never had to much of a problem with the faction that owns Granada though since it seems to change hands all the time maybe because once a faction has trained about 5 units of urban miltia another faction walks through there only to be defeated by a superior force http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif
