Edited: oh yeah, I guess I should say I am using Gnome editor in case you didnt read the title or something http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif
Does MTW crash when you try to run it with that file? If so, then you may have made an error, deleted/added a tab, or something else.

I don't edit with Gnome, but it is very useful for detecting any format errors and for checking that I placed new text in the right column. It doesn't say where, just that something is wrpong.

well then is there a way to reformat the file then? the last thing I did before it screwed up was I was editing what buildings a few knights would need to be built because it was empty, so I tried to edit it, but I messed up and didnt add the quotes around the brackets on one side, so I put three of em' in and the file got unformated.
You will have to check each line that you've changed and make sure everything is in the correct column and using the correct format. Alternatively, you could start from scratch and confirm each line is correct before changing the next line. Tabulated text files can be delicate.
I didn't like the order they appeared on the unit menu in game, so when I was re-organizing 'crusaders_unit_prod11.txt', I then discovered you can't use the whole line select thingie in wordpad. However, you can use shift-end-backarrow for selecting whole lines.

you should keep a back up of the file youre editing before you edit it in gnome, then each time you make a change and it works, back that up too. thats what i do anyway
