View Full Version : Portraits of kings in the game
My question is when you select your king and the portrait shows are they for the mostpart fictional or is that what they closely looked like from the paintings that were able to be preserved.
And another question is how many medievel paintings of kings and emporers still exist today. I'm guessing not too many as when another bloodline took over they probably got destroyed

Well, theres only a few people who have unique portaits as far as I am aware - Joan of Arc (I believe Swoosh so has her for an avatar), Saladin and Henry V or Richard the Lionheart, not sure which of those last 2 (its The Emperors avatar anyway.
As far as portaits go,I'm no art historian but there are paintings that survive from the middle ages, but most of them are quite simplistic (think Bayuex Tapestry). I don't think "proper" portraits came about till the Rennaisence (sp?)

In our Napoleonic campaign Mod for VI we are able to make each Kings portrait and name match, with the addition of the heroes file in VI it makes it possible to match portrait and name for Kings, Generals, etc. which adds a nice touch of realism to the game

Yea i've seen the picture of like Wellington, and they do add realism to the game, no common place general pictures.

Most of the Kings in MTW are fictional anyway except I suppose the ones you start of with.

Actually, they stick as close a possible to the Kings character. King Phillipe of France is true, Doge Vitale II, Alexius Comenaus, its just the portraits that are different.

What I mean is that as England for example you start of with William II (historically accurate) and then you often end up with King Edmund, King Alfred etc etc
IIRC the actual list was William II, HEnry I, Stephen (Matilda), Henry II, Richard, John, Henry III, Edward etc....

Yeh there are very few unique portraits, and these are mainly taken from the Historical campaign screens rather than appearing in the Single Player Campaign.

Yeah, the Emperor is right, they are from the historical campaigns, so add Ghengis Khan & Frederick Barbaross to the list.
