View Full Version : How to use (insert unit)?
Gendarmes. While having fairly decent stats and the ability to dismout to become CMAA before battle, they just seem to be inferior versions of other catholic heavy cav.
Hashishin. These totally mystify me. Sure they can hide in the open when not moving. But as soon as you move them and try to get around behind the enemy the AI goes after them. Plus, if they happen to survive, but the time they are actually in position to strike the general, my xbows/archers have already killed the general.

Hashishin are not very good, though they do have a high morale factor, the problem is their unit is so small they do very little bow damage and get slaughtered in melee...
I say use Napthas instead, they make better General/King Killers.

Gendarmes are just that, they are however also a way to get more heavy cav without having to pay the increased price which you would have when you'd take 6 Chiv knights...
I good thing to do Is edit Sherwood Foresters in. They are pretty musch the same as hashishin but are Longbowmen not shortbowmen http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif . I usually give them the same build requirements just change Ribat to Monastery and make it catholic specific.

yes it is, depends on where the sun is ...
Gendarmes can be useful. If you look at their stats, they are more of a defensive cav kinda. I don't really use them for that, more so for flanking, since they have higher defensive stats they'll lose significantly less men that way. One thing that annoys me is when you flank, make a chain route, and still lose about 15 cavs from your unit in the process. I understand it, but thats why I use Gendarmes for flanking (in SP) because they'll lose less men.

Gendarmes are mainly a mobile defence, filling the gaps in your line. You don't need more than 1 or 2.
