I was wondering if your name was taken from James Clavelle's Novel Shogun or is this a real historical character? I also was to mention this one of my top 5 favourite books it's amazing. I would defintly suggest this book to anyone who likes the Japanese civilisation. The book is based on 1600 Japan and is great.

Hi, just noticed your post.

Yes, I *am* Toranaga, Lord of the Kwonto, and I am real http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Discovered Clavell's novel Taipan a long time ago, back in Junior High School, purusing the my school's library. I became an immediate Clavell fan and have read all of his books. Becoming introduced to Japanese ancient culture through Shogun. Like you, Shogun is one of my favorite Novels.

Yes, Toranaga is based on a historical figure who did become Shogun and unite Japan. Here's a little quick info:

Tokugawa Ieyasu (http://www.samurai-archives.com/ieyasu.html)

I've been told that there is a better book with similar subject matter titled Musashi (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/index%3Dbooks%26field-keywords%3Deiji%20yoshikawa%26url%3Dindex%3Dbooks%26store-name%3Dbooks/102-9451227-7004935) I haven't read this yet, but plan to. Shogun has been noted to have a number of inaccuracies as Clavell, apparently, used a great deal of creative license to write a GREAT novel. Musashi is supposed to be more historically accurate or something.

If you have Shogun: Total War, The Creative Assembly hired a Historian to help them with background info, and much of it was included on the CD. Too bad they didn't do similarly with MTW.

JFYI, there's a new Tom Cruise movie coming in December (U.S.) titled The Last Samurai, which has a loosely similar theme as Shogun.

Stephen Turnbull is the name of the historian who was consulted for STW. Here is the link to his official site (http://freespace.virgin.net/stephen.turnbull/publications.htm).

I have to admit that I have this sudden urge to read Shogun for the first time.

Whereas 'Shogun' tells a story of the creation of the Toranaga (Tokugawa) shogunate, 'The Last Samurai' takes place at the end of the Tokugawa bakufu, near the time of the Satsuma Rebellion. Should be good watching nontheless.
