I was playing as the Vikings the other night and was attacked by a much larger Mercian force. In desperation, I threw my Berserkers at a full unit of Mercian Spearmen (about 130) in the hopes that the berserkes could hold them off long enough for me to stabilize the other areas of the battlefield.

After a minute or two I was surpised and pleased to see that not only were the berserkers Winning Easily but they had also already killed off about two-dozen spearmen in exchange for only two of their own. A minute or two later I was able to reinforce the berserkers and the Mercians broke and ran.

To be honest, I haven't been training that many berserkers because of their price, but I should probably rethink that.

Still, Winning Easily at 1:10 odds seems to be too good.

Not really. These twelve guys are each tremedous warriors, heroes even, and when you band 12 of em together and throw them against 100 hundred scared spearmen, who knows what will happen

Berserkers tend to do that to most things. It is fun to send them up against masses of units of things like peasents and watch them slaughter the fleeing masses http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif.

On that first picture - I think I'd rather be one of the dead than that poor soul in front of the right most berserker. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif

If you can get berserkers make as many as you can http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Maintenance is dirt cheap and they will give any unit in the game a thrashing

I became a convert after reading a thread here. I couldn't believe the lavish praise this unit was being given http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/shock.gif Started a campaign as the Picts and conentrated on producing 'zerkers. Wasn't even close http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif Beserkers chewed up anything that they could catch; small unit size magnifies the valour increase as well-make sure you turn the tidy up units option off so you can custom combine these guys http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

once i got 15 units of them together under a 8 star-gen all together they where 180 berserkers and 60 men in gen unit.

i attacked the saxons who had 3000+ men, but they withdrew without a fight, next year the saxon gatherd 6000+ men and attacked.

i thout: what the heck, vikings never say surrender, or flee. so i put up a fight

after the long battle i had killed 2800+ and only 50-something, about 20 of them was from the gen unit, of my berserkers was killed and about 30 of them died in the end cause they was so exhausted.

so after that battle i start to produce them as fast as i can and as many as possible, they are the only units i use when i attack well 12 of the 16 units are. 1 gen unit and 3 cav units is what i use in attacks

I love to see the suped up Berserkers you have after a battle (they gain Valours like nothing else). Having had several battles where I had three or four units of 3-4 Berserkers each. When they attack the enemy they litterally forces the enemy units to cave in on themselves. It look like when a guy get a heavy punch to the guts, they simply fold over.

The only bad part about them is theit trainingtime and their heavy losses during sieges (I always remove them when a siege is going to happen).
