View Full Version : Linguistics ..
I'm the guy quoted by 'Stefan the Berserker' in his thread named Linguistics (can be found in Game Related->Colosseum->Linguistics .. (Link (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=19;t=10687)).
I just wanted to inform the fellow readers of this thread that my translations are only very raw, since the vocabulary of Gothic is very limited. The translations I did are a mixture of Gothic grammar, Gothic words and, when I didn't have a Gothic word, Icelandic, which is the language I thought to fit best referring to words, since the Icelandic dictionary contains many Old-Nordic words, and German, which is the language which fits best referring to Gothic pronunciation of words (and also my mother tongue).
An example: there's no Gothic word for wedge I was able to find - but wedge is kíll in Icelandic and Keil in German (both masculines with a strong stem), so I created the word *káils (a masculine strong stem word which would have been spoken like the German word) in Gothic. It's not historically based, but this word really might have existed.
So this Gothic (or Neo-Gothic or whatever) is a mixture of old Germanic languages. If you look at Old English you'll find a similar (but less old) vocabulary and a pronunciation differing very much.
Of course not all of the Germanics spoke Gothic - but Gothic is the only reproduceable Germanic language spoken within the epoch the game's set in.
[Umm .. it seems I started talking too much.] Well, although this may not be any contribution to the game I hope it could be a bit convincing or whatever.
I'll answer questions if there are any. I can also try to translate some other sentences if any of you wants me to do this.
Herzlich Wilkommen Jens. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
I for one find this totally great. Well done for your work I hope that CA do take note of this. Even though they did not bother with Turkish commands/titles etc... for MTW which would have been as simple as this:

*Attack is the best form of defence -
Baskin basanin, av vuranin
*Attack Strike-Tarruuz savazi
*Defence-Savunma
*Defense Committee-Savunma Kurulu

I translated the above with the help of dictionaries and online resources. This was just an amateur try at some more authenticity for MTW. Some of the wrods obviously can't be used, I just wanted a translation for myself. Anyway we have Turks speaking Arabic in MTW. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif
I really hope that your ideas do get into RTW. I'd recommend direct contact and not rely entirely on forums, alone.
Btw would you be so kind as to let us know where you study and what other languages are in the curriculum at your school. Who knows we may appreciate your help for some mods for RTW or MTW.
Tschuess. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pat.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif
EDIT: sorry some of the Turkish fonts don;t appear for some reason. You can see the above traslations here (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=5;t=9489;st=50) for more clarity. Scroll down a bit. Cheers http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
I'm studying Comparative Linguistics [with stress on Northern European and Baltic Languages], General Linguistics and Germanistics at the University of Mainz.
I'm currently attending courses of Finnish, Latvian (those two don't have anything in common with Germanic Languages .. I just mentioned them to complete the list) and Old Nordic - and also a bit Gothic, since it's a part of a historical linguistics seminar I'm attending - and attended a course in Swedish last year (I found it a bit boring since the Grammar's not very difficult so I stopped) .. I taught myself Icelandic (I can read & write it but not speak fluently or listen & understand everything, since it's much work to learn all the words), Dutch (exactly the same) and Gothic.
I also once learnt - more or less - Latin, French, Spanish and Italian .. but Romanic languages aren't very interesting to me any more ..
So you see I don't have got a degree or something like this .. I'm just a student of Linguistics and a language fanatic .. hum, I guess this makes the translations I did less convincing.
Not at all. That's pretty impressive. I love languages as well. I guess since I am Oriental I have more of a tendency towards those languages. I did teach myself (thanks to environment) French, some German, and some Dutch. Did some Japanese at univeristy. I hope to learn Persian, Arabic and Turkish, eventually. Mainly so I can read and understand fully the great poets, historians, philosophers etc of these beautiful languages.
Perhaps you (or Stefan) should post your suggestions at the official (http://www.totalwarforums.com) forims as well, you can a bit later once you're past to Junior Member status vote in this (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=19;t=8622) poll. In any case you can provide a link to that poll at the official forums as well. I would strongly recommend direct action (email, telephone), as well.
Cheers
