No less an authority than General Douglas MacArthur (http://truemeaningoflife.com/wisdom.php?topid=22871&responses=3), reconcquistador of the Phillippines and mastermind of the Inchon Gambit, throws his weight fully behind Iron Man play! Throw aside your "quicksave" and "quickload", comrades! Together, we will defeat the worst Lady Luck throws our way!

And stuff. I dunno, maybe this should be OT, but I think it'll fit in General. Mods, feel free to do your thing, if you think you should. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

For the longest time, I only used Saves and Restores in S:TW for the sake of ending a session. The thought never even occurred to me to abuse the save and restores until I read how people were conquering Japan in fifteen years...yet using restores to remove traces of bad choices.

I suppose games like Shogun just have always inspired me to play them out like 'real life', taking the bumps along the way. Shogun is wonderful in the it usually allows you to suffer a few humilating defeats, yet still come back on top. It's not like Max Payne, where a mistake will end the game.

Maybe it's just my old school gaming where saves weren't so easily available that has taught me to play smart and value each action...unlike the mentality inspired by modern games where people save before turning each and every corner.

I've used the save restore feature a few times since...usually just out of a desire to experiment ("Well, once I took that province with only 150 men...let's see if I can't kick Hojo's 5000 out there with 200").

To me, saving and restoring takes away the challenges and the unexpected nature of the game.

People complain about AIs cheating in games all te time, then they go ahead and use the greatest cheat of all...the ability to time travel and correct mistakes without thinking twice.
