Ok, I'm playing as Byzantines in my first campaign. It is the late 1200s and I have taken North Africa, Spain, and am now attacking France from the south. I took Portugal, but they kept rebelling. Sure, I could keep crushing the peasants and spearmen, but my army was needed elsewhere. So, I left Portugal alone, planning to get it later. I remember deciding that it was not worth bribing them either, as there would just be another rebellion there, and I didn't want to waste money on poor troops. I left Portugal there with some 20 rebel units there, half peasants and half spears (some archers too).

A few decades later, I decide to look on the minimap just to see how glorious my empire is. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif However, something strange has occured. I have the entire Iberian peninsula Sure enough, in Portugal, the same units that were rebels were now purple. And the loyalty is about 180%. I'm sure I didn't bribe them. As a matter of fact, I completely forgot all about Portugal while I was busy fighting France, Germany, and Hungary (they all attacked me http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif). I also didn't get any message informing me of this fact.

So, am I going crazy, or did some rogue emissary steal some of my money and gave it to the Portuguese? I find it hard to believe that rebels would do this. Not that I'm complaining though... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Whenever any faction holds a province, even if it's only for 1 turn, that province can join a loyalist uprising if it's currently rebel.

During your game, did any loyalist uprisings occur supporting you? If so, then Portugal probably joined them.

Not often, but it happens. Sometimes a rebel group will join a faction. The interesting thing is that the game doesn't give you any notice of the event.

Probably, has something to do with Influence. What's the level of yours?

Ah, so it wasn't just me. It was not a loyalist rebellion. They rebelled against me after I took the province from the Spanish, and they joined me a few decades later. The Emperor's influence is 9.

Now if only the French, Germans, and the Hungarians would do the same... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif Oh, and the English now too. Why does everyone want to attack me?

Right, is NOT a rebellion of any type. I think its just coincidental that it was Portugal. I wonder if proximity by the King has anything to do with which rebeal group Joins...hmmm

That is VERY high Influence, and goes along with my theory.

Wow, I'm not sure I've ever had such high Influence, but then I've been playing my Harcore Rules and/or in conjunction with the MedMod for so long, wherein I'm lucky if my King has *any* Influence at all. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif 5/6 is usually the highest I get lately, which, not that I think of it, may be why its been so long since a Rebl unit has Joined with me.

I don't think the proximity of the king has anything to do with it. My Emperor was back in Constantinople (but then again, I'm sure that influence reached all the way to Portugal&#33http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif.

Previously, I read on this forum that Portugal was quite a rebellious province, and I've seen it rebel quite a few times over the course of my short game. So, it really caught me by surprise that Portugal, of all provinces, would just give up independence and join the Empire. Oh well, they are on their way to France to act as a speed bump in a future battle as I maneuver my forces.

Yup In vanilla MTW, Portugal may be THE most rebellious province. You ALWAYS need to keep a sharp eye on its Loyalty and Religious level(s). It takes a virutally a FULL stack VERY MANY turns to get it under control.

Good Luck http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Have Fun

If you look at the starpos.txt file you'll see that the rebellion level of Portugal is 4, along with Lithuania and Scotland, I think.
You can change this rebellion level up to 6, although 4 is the highest at installation.

With this high level of rebellion it is indeed strange what happened, and it negates the only truthfull thing about Portugal in this game. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif
And I was so proud of our willingness to stand alone and defiant.

This is most common after a civil war and you have managed to bring your nation back to greatness. Especially if there was loyal blood in the few that you have not requonqerd. My massive civil war helped me greatly more than hurt me (of course it killed my paycheck) but it greatly increased the influence of the king and when nations came in to take advantage of the rebels they decided they liked me more than those other factions and the mass rebellion took a 180 degree turn and all rebel troops that were previously mine came back.
