Same costs but, with the building for the contruction of pavise arbalesters, arbalesters get a +1 bonus to their valor.

So is the really big shield better than the +1 valour bonus ?

Speaking of the single player game only, I would prefer arbalesters. I don't think the +1 valour matters much to missile troops but the big shield slows the arbalesters down too much. I tend not to lose that many missile troops to other missiles - it is the AI cav/melee that is a threat and the slow speed makes it that much harder for me to get my shooters to safety should things start going wrong.

Does valor have no impact on accuracy ?

You can get the +1v for pav arbs too. Just retrain them. AFAIK, the valour brings only a very slight improvement of accuracy.

Is retraining an unit free ?

I mean re-training a full-strength unit without it getting a weapon or armour upgrade ?

Since I installed V, I have noticed that if for instance, you re-train viking from Denmark in Norway they will get the +1 valour bonus (this was not the case with the pre-patch version of MTW)?

So does re-training just to get an increase in valour due to the building or the region costs anything ?

No big deal if as far as arbalesters are concerned if you started the campaign in early but, if you play as the Danes, every penny counts in the beginning.

I find that both have thir uses: if I intendforthem to stay put and hopefully attract all the enemy fire then pavises are the way forward. This is generally in defending bridge crossings or at the sides of a steep hill (where attackers can be hit in the sides before they reach the arteblasters.
Normal ones are used in all other situations or behind those with pavise shields.

I've found pavise arbalesters invaluable against the endless Golden Horde horse archers. The big shields enable them to hold out a really long time against the rain of arrows... I faced off against the Horde once in a bridge battle, and my side of the bridge was sloping up - so I placed 4 pavise arbs on the hillside and they just annhilated the Horde - 4 rows of 60.

Vanya sez...

Arbamolesters fire faster than their paved counterparts. But, they lack the big shield, so they taste arrow steel more often.

So, if you want your men to last longer but still have enough time to enjoy a cup of hot toddy between volleys, then used the paved units. If you want to saturate the enemy with arrows, use the unshielded versions. (Though an archer unit can dump more arrows per minute on a target, but they dump their whole load a lot faster http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif ).

Next on the agenda: Vanya suggests that org members that are nuns drop the dreary black and grey uniforms and adopt new cloths sporting vibrant colors and sleek cuts. Vanya thinks we can turn them into liberal org nuns in no time http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif
