Okay, I'm playing the HRE GA. Things are going well, homelands secure couple of crusades under my belt. What I am having trouble with is the Pope. I see France wage war on the Spanish and English with no papal reprocussions. Neither is excomed. I look sideways at the Italians thinking of reclaiming the needed lands for some glory points and BANG warned. So I back off. The italians then proceed to attack my fleet. One turn and my fleet sinks 2 boats during and Italian attack and I get excommunicated. Now during a GA campaign this is lights out as I can't launch a new cruasade.
My question is why does the AI catholic factions seem to be able to continually attack without threat of excommunication?

I have beat MTW many times and each time I play there is at least two enemy factions that get excommunicated. Maybe it was just a freak happening that your enemy was not getting excommunicated. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif
I had the same thing happen to me in my Spanish GA game, the Italians again.
I had just gotten my fleet to stretch to the ME when the Italians attacked me in Provence and the seas by their coast. Warned. I quit because its 1180 and I have 2 Crusades to go. The Markers are in Portugal and so are the armies to go in them. The Italians move fleets to the African coast and lose 2 fleets. I get Excommunicated.
Now I'm done because my King is 25 with no heirs due for 12 years and the Pope is 19, so he's not going to keel over any time soon.
The Italians got excommunicated also, in fact I think only the Polish and Danes aren't excommunicated at the moment. Maybe not anymore as this is a new Pope. This GA game is now resembling a normal conquest game.
I was wondering if every christian faction gets excommunicated does the Pope lose all influence? He should just go away and become a minor faction.

I think if they attack you the pope doesnt care. Every time an enemy faction gets excommunicated in my game of MTW, they are always atacking another Catholic faction that is not you.
P.S. Can someone please answer the Shogun Books thread? It is kind of urgent http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

Well, that is common. Don't attack unless your king is old, or the pope is. So the excom does not last long... Or fake attack versus a weak opponent(Aragones), get warned, and destroy anyone else qithout getting annoyed. Don't mess with the Aragonese for 10 years, though...
Anyways, Excom is not a big problem, as long as you're not tight on loyalty. I usually don't care.

Sometimes the pope forgets to excomm me, even if he does i show him the error of his ways by tearing through any catholic factions i can find.
It doesn't do anything in the game really like persuading the pope to be nice or anything but its nicer to think that you embarrassed him. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Being excommed as the HRE is not a pleasant thing to happen, as the generals are not usually the most loya without thinking that you are against their religion. Often until the pope forgives you, it is fighting rebellions in your lands, rebellious generals and the occasional crusade that decides to cleanse the area; in short it takes a miracle to survive, as often your neighbours decide to take a piece of you as well. I think that other fractions have an easier time of it, as thir lands are not quite as close to the knife-edge of anarchy as the HRE is.
Just kill the pope. Before I go after glory points in GA I make sure that I have about 10 beefed up assasins, all at least valour 3, and as soon as the excommunication comes I drop them all right on top of the pope, that is unless he is old. Here you can use the 56-bug to your advantage.

Try looking the the sticky topic in this forum called 'Beginner's Guide to Total War', it has a long section on excommunication which should tell you everything you ever need to know. It even tells you how to use the Pope to your advantage
I have added in some suggestions to your Shogun books thread, I hope they are what you are looking for. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I have read the whole beginners guide. Its a great help for a MTW novice such as I. What was baffling me was the fact that after the first dust up, the Italians initiated an attack on my shipping, which was dumb as i had a better navy, and just because my ships won I got excommed. I didn't start it this time. Now I realize you can off a Pope and get re-instated, I was just wondering if this happens to other people.
