I don't think I've ever fought a game at 15k, 10k is the real standard.

In my experience you need to have 4 muskets and 2-3 other ranged units, either SA or CA. Your remaining 9-10 units would be a mix of cavalry and infantry, Mainly ND and YS for the infantry and YC and NC for the cavalry. It doesn't really matter how many of each you bring, you will just have to use a different tactic on the battlefield depending on your army.

Koku balance is also important, Your infantry will need to be honor 5 or 6, your cavalry 3 or 4, and I usually find it best to bring hon 0 SA and CA. Taisho's are best mounted and you should not spend more than around 1000 koku on them.

Of course your army will need to change depending on the map, I have a set of around 10 armys that I use depending on the map/patch.

Fiddle around with your musket's upgrades, I've seen all kinds of muskest, Hon3A1 are the most powerful for your money I think but I've seen or brought Hon3A0, Hon2A2, Hon2A0, Hon1A0 and even H2A2. You might find it easier at the start to pump up your guns somewhat, this can allow you to win the ranged war which is good when your are starting and don't have practice charging.

Download the logfile reader from this site and see what kind of armies other people bring, it can be instructive.

Gun heavy combat is for 1.02. In 1.03 you can bring much more varied armies, I didn't list any configs because there aren't really any do's and don'ts. There is only dropping with a mismatch.

Resist the guns Liberate yourself from their evil. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

Togakure, from what you are saying (losing to identical armies), it sounds like you need to ween yourself off the pause key. You might be better off jumping right into MP - kick the pause key habit and learn how to fight human intelligence at the same time. Otherwise you'll have to learn how to deal with no pauses and then go online and have to learn how to fight a human player. It might be best to get over the pain in one step rather than two. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/dizzy.gif

Shinano has been promoted - he's a Junior Member. You had me panicked for a second that we had somehow overlooked him. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif

I don't get online much. Usually about twice a year for a week or two each time...which means I'm about due... I find that I can do well when the battle starts and I've even managed to get the upper hand on some very good players, but I always fall apart. It seems I can't manuever my units well enough to exploit my initial advantage. Which means it isn't long before my men are running from the field. And then there are the times when I'm like a deer in headlights - sitting there completely brain-locked and watching my army get destroyed.

Good luck finding opponents. They are rare these days in the STW world.
