Rome-The Path to the Dark Age

Release Dates
Roman Europe Campaign Map-Today (17th September 2003)
Version 0.1-Estimated September 30th (Possibly sooner, my school schedule has appeared to be alot less demanding than previously expected leaving me with many free afternoons and mornings)
Version 1-Estimated Mid to Late October

Current Status
The Campaign Map has been given a make over, provinces are given names from a map of Europe from the Roman times (Russian provinces however have been left unchanged through lack of knowledge of the names from this time zone, if I or anyone can direct me to a site with the correct information). The map itself has taken in total 15 hours to create, much on that time was the texturing of the map to be simply plain and available to write provincial names upon it. All MTW units have been wiped off, all that remain CURRENTLY are the Royal Units, as of today the factions will begin to take shape and gain their units, first up is the Britons and their units shall be completed to a minor level today, there will be less units than in the first non-beta release and they will not be perfectly balanced firstly, the first goal is to get most things in there for a very basic game.

Current Factions
The following factions will appear in the first release, I do realise that there is very few actually there (5 in total) but they will be added in over time, I have decided to start of with just a few factions and then move on to adding more when I've got some good solid factions done.

The Britons
The Romans
The Carthaginians
The Germanians
The Aegyptians

The Timezone
As previously planned (A year ago today, or around then) there is three periods, the first version concentrates on the period which is depicted in the upcoming Rome:Total War™ to quite simply get it out of the way, I am NOT going to go head to head with a professional company of programmers, it will be merely a small version of it to amuse until the relase of Rome:Total War™.

What is there to do?
Add units and buildings, that means a new tech tree which will be different depending on culture, barbarians will get buildings that reflect their lack of knowledge architecture wise and Romans will get much better buildings to relfect their advanced civilisations, Barbarians will however have rather good units on their charge etc. to compensate for their lack of building technology. Thats it basically, that will be the requirements for V0.1 basically, I aren't going to sit around again this time, before I ADMIT I didn't work to a good standard hence the collapse of the MOD, I however have a new outlook on life, one mainly been that I will try alot harder before giving up (That wasn't decided because of MOD's, it is a life descision due to my growing up and realising certain things, but enough about me&#33http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif. It is highly likely that the MOD's first version will be finished before the date I set, I can speedily add units and the like, it is the re-edittin units shields etc (Units animations will be addressed further).

Website?
There is a website already up, http://www.geocities.com/mtwturks/Home.html Only the main page is up, but I believe 9 screenshots are available (I know some are, they are off the new campaign map skin). The site is geocities hosted so it is possible you will not be able to see the pictures due to other people getting there before you, I may upload some pics to the Org (I believe GPMB has done this with the BRITANNIA MOD).

Unit Graphics
Units themselves will NOT be edittied in anyway what so ever, however, unit WEAPONS and SHIELDS will be. Lord Krazy CLEARLY is no longer on the project and I am not going to ask anybody to make units for me, if anything I would rather make a good enough MOD to persuade someone to make the personal descision to make some new unit animations. This sadly means, NO Chariots or Carthaginian War Elephants unless someone is kind enough to OFFER (I will not ask because I have no reason to expect them to accept) their services.

Doubters and Slanderers
If you have any insults or doubts about the MOD, do NOT post them here, e-mail me at samandshirley@splaxton.fsnet.co.uk and address me personally, all e-mails shall be replied to and all doubters will be silenced in a few days when the first version of a MOD started a year ago is released, the scale on the start is smaller and easier to do after monthes of messing about and among other things, I have the heart for it. So, Wellington (Sorry, but you did say something last time so I'm using you as an example, nothing against you) and co, if you have any insult to my MOD, e-mail me, don't reply, I want to keep the good humour, positive or NEUTRAL comments only please, otherwise I shall ask the Moderators to delete your post.

Middle Earth : Total War
I shall continue to aid the MOD when my role is needed to be filled, currently I am applied to tech tree, proper work cannot happen as soon as the other area's, I would also need to wait for a team leader as I don't believe there currently is one for tech tree's.

Updates in post
Updates will be posted EVERY day, just so you know where I am and so on, plus proof that I am actually doing something this time

Thank You

PS-If you cannot view the screenshots, please wait so I can see if I am allowed to host them on the Org, basically because geocities can be an ass and not allow alot to view the page, screenshots are around a week old now I think, next screenshots will be of units and battles and will be out in about 2 days, the current ones are simply there to show I have done some work, anyone who wants the map now please e-mail me and I shall see if alot of people want it then I will upload it (its in the 800kb range).

Thank you for the replies.

Hadrians Wall has been removed on the completed version I believe, it will be back on before the first release though.

Work on units is starting today, yesterday I stupidly wiped over my DEFULAT_REGION file and spent most of the free time I had re-doing all of that, however I now have a backed up version of both the map and the region file.

Heres the list of British units that will be created tonight:
Woad Warriors
British Light Cavalry(Royal Unit)
Icenii Berserkers(Icenii possibly spelt incorrectly, will look that up tonight)
Barbarian Axemen

By around nine o'clock you should have a screenshot of some units in battle, I know the Brits don't have an impressive number of units just yet but they shall gain some more units, factions specific and barbarian shared ones.

If anyone can tell me the names of the Russian provinces during Roman Europe I would be VERY grateful for you help, my e-mail is in the top post.

Thank You

Hi NS,

Neither I, nor anyone else for that matter, have ever insulted your mod http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif , the reason being
no-one has ever seen it before http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I presume your refering to my comments after you resurrected this mod for the 4th time, have killed it on 3 prior occasions, whilst other people were still working with you on it.

Hey, if you want to try a 5th time it's none of my business Just stick with it this time.

lol yes the number of resurrections with no work has been rediculous, I apologise for that.

One problem I am having his with my factions, I would like to remove them from the campaign but am currently having troubles getting this to work, if you could help me with that I would be grateful, or anyone for that matter.

The Gallics have now been added to the faction list after I viewed Time Commanders last night.

As for Russia, currently it will just have to keep its current names, expect some screenshots in the near future (Units have been made, only I haven't re-done their shields so I didn't feel there was much point to showing you BIF's of Topless Loons and so forth until something had changed on them).

Thank You

Whats your e-mail LoS? And thank you very much, this will speed things up if I dont have to sit for about a week figuring it out lol.

Thank you SK, I'm still messing about with that MOD for you, shouldn't be too long now, but obviously this takes priority, plus I'm having some MSN troubles so excuse my absence from there.

Just got back home and am about to go add some more units, I'll report back later.

Thank You.

Right, Sam. Just send me the mod when you're ready, and when you have internet. I'm making a simple, player friendly Ancient Rome mod, with no new units or anything, just a new campaign and faction/region stuff. Go download it if you wish.

The following units are done:

British Berserkers
British Light Cavalry
Woad Warriors

The testing for the campaign will begin when all factions have atleast a minor amount of units.

Daily report, as always.

Thanks to LoS for his current help with the campaign, he's made it much easier for me to release a toned down version quickly before even thinking about splitting the Germanians and others into their assorted tribes (Rest assured, they will appear in the first proper release, factions will be added and removed all the time).

There are currently three units implemented into the game, the Royal Unit for the Brtions and two other units with new weapons, however they don't look as good as I would like so no screenshots yet, most likely you'll recieve these tommorrow, plus some shots of the FINISHED campaign map seen as the current ones are around 10 days old.

Work today is getting the campaign foundations done, LoS will help me with this thankfully, tommorrow will be units.

Thank You

How did you get the Romans Rome?
Are they the Pope?

NagatsukaShumi
09-22-2003, 17:07
Yes, the Romans are the Papacy. They are lead by the Emperor, hence I've made the Emperor Electable after the previous one cops it, it also means the Pope has a use as he is not allowed to be disabled as he will simply re-appear after one turn, so yes, the Romans are indeed the Papacy. Because of the Popes un-removable nature I removed the Germans instead, if I could remove the Pope I would and have used the Germans, but, sadly it isn't possible.

Here is a post by Aurelian in the Entrance Hall:

-----
Hello Nag.,

I have a recommendation for you regarding the Russian provinces in your mod. Run off to your University library and pick up a copy of Tacitus' Germania (or find the text on the web). There is a section in the Germania where he talks about all the peoples in that big scary area to the North. There may very well be a map available in some edition. This would be extremely helpful. Tacitus has quite a list of barbarians and their geographic relationship to each other. His work would represent Roman knowledge of that part of the world in the 1st century AD.

Additionally, while you are in the library, check out any books you can find on the Germanic migrations. A good scholarly book on the subject might have a map detailing where individual tribes might have originated.

This should get you a long way towards your map. Just name your non-Roman provinces after the prevalent tribes and peoples in the region. You'll still have to probably fudge things a bit in the extreme east.

NOW, I'm not sure from your post exactly what the time frame is going to be for the different sections of your mod. Your initial factions look fun. The Germanians would be Germans or Germani.

A few suggestions for units:

Celtic warriors: Based on the shirtless loon bif. Big sword. Big shield (sadly they only have round shields on the bif). Charges hard. Low defense. Low morale.

Germanic warriors: Based on the shirtless loon bif. Spears. Big shield. Decent morale. Perhaps just a slower tougher version of the slav warriors unit.

Higher grade Celtic warriors might look good with the Viking bif. Higher grade Germans might look good with the Huscarle bif. Some Celts would have been armored quite early. In fact, the Romans probably mimicked the Celts in their use of mail. Germans didn't start wearing armor till the migration period - and then probably only bodyguard comitatus.

Hope that helps. More later if you want. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

Factions for the East portion of the map:

In the South four Greek (hellenic/hellenistic factions):
- Hellenes (Greece)
- Macedonian (Bulgaria, Serbia, Constantinople)
- Seleukids (Edessa, Syria, Antioch)
- Pergamon Kingdom (L.Armenia, Rum, Anatolia)

North
- Pondus (Krimea, Kiev, maybe Khazar)
- Skythian (several eastern provinces)
- Dacian (Moldavia, Hungaria etc.)

Also, I suggest you rename Egypt (lands: Egypt, Sinai, Jerousalem) to Ptolemeans or Lagids (Hellenistic) they owned the place in the timeframe of the mod.

Very good effort overall... and quite ambitius too. Hope to play it someday. Keep up the good work.

Thank you for the reply, the first release contains very few factions and isn't entirely hitorically accurate, what I have planned is to release that first and then build off of it to turn it more historically accurate in time, though, if I think it would be better I may simply make it more historically accruate for the first release, we shall see.

Thank You.
