Basic Roads

Roads are vital to control, allowing armies to move rapidly to meet any threat. These roads are minor, but brought up to a military standard where necessary. They are ancient tracks worn into the landscape, created by generations of locals to link hamlets and farms. They tend to follow the natural features of the land and follow raised contours between fords, and easily bridged points on rivers, literally the 'the path of least resistance', but one that is also unlikely to flood. Military engineers improve these ancient ways a little with simple bridges, a stony roadbed in marshy places and by cutting back vegetation. They are not ideal roads for military forces wanting to cover long distances but are certainly better than nothing.

On the road again

Vanya's Guide to Building an RTW Road.
======================================

Building a road is a complex and time consuming endeavor. But, will youz be getting what you expected? Vanya lays out all the ins and outs of Roman road work.

BASIC ROAD
Prerequisites: Fort
Adds +1 to mobility.

WIDE ROAD
Prerequisites: Keep, Road Worker
Adds +2 to mobility, +1 Acumen.

THOROUGHFARE
Prerequisites: Castle, Road Workers Guild Mason Guild
Adds +3 to mobility, +2 Acument, -1 Piety.
(The loss of piety is due to the appearance you care more
about making money and stimulating the economy than you do
about the spiritual health of your constituents.)
Thoroughfares are large roads that are often "paved" with stones. They are large enough to support ample merchant traffic and moderate troop movements.

HIGHWAY
Prerequisites: Citadel, Road Workers Union, Mason Union
+4 mobility, -2 Acument, -2 Piety, +5 Happiness.
In addition, however, because the King is dealing with unions, he will find out that the roads will be exceedingly costly. ANd half way through the construction, the workers will strike and demand more money. The King can attempt to put down their rebellion by marching his army in to crush them. But doing so will mean the roadwork will be left unfinished, and he will have to start the project over. Because union workers and teamsters are "dirty li'll scoundrels", any King thought of as "in cohoots" with the unions (ie, they give in to their strikes and give them what they want) will get +3 Dread, as it is common knowledge that the heads of the King's (and union's) enemies are used to pave these legendary roads. These Roman unions were the first to proclaim "It's my way or the highway".

Highways are the largest roads, and support massive military marches. They are elevated so as to protect them and its travelers from flood waters. When under attack, the highway also serves as a curtain wall that can be used to protect an army from an assailant's band of brigands or even an enemy army bent on the destruction of the Roman way of life.
