View Full Version : Developer support
Hi everyone,
I have just joined The Org out of growing disatisfaction with a certain other forum and am hoping that the more stringent moderation of this forum will be more to my liking. My reason for originally joining the other forum was that I assumed that the developers would pay more attention to that board and indeed they have made the occasional appearance.
Now I know many of you have experience with more than one TW forum, so could someone please tell me what sort of attention CA give to this forum in comparison to others?
Thanks,
Brux

Hello Brux

Well i've seen developers but people like Wellington and the blind king of Bohemia are pretty much made and its always clever to listen to them http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
They do appear more than the .com forums which is where i used to be. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif what a naffy forum, people here are a lot more helpful.

Welcome to the org http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif
The developers drop by this forum quite regularly, however you can always tell when they are very busy as their attendance drops off a little. At the moment we seem to be in one of the slack periods, I would guess this is because they are finishing off the VI patch. You can recognise the developers very easily here as they have a custom icon in the shape of a CA shield.
I used to post on the official forums but I quickly tired of the endless bickering and childishness. The org has a much better atmosphere and, dare I say it, a better clientele. These days I only post there if I need to, for example I posted supporting Bushface in advertising our pack recently.
I find the developer support here to be acceptable http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
You could always want more but I do find this forum a lot better..and yes a lot better atmosphere.

Developer support is ok, provided you realise it is on their terms. They pop in occaisionally in their spare time and if something catches their interest, they may post. There is no official policy of actively maintaining a presence which I suspect some other developers have. That said, they provide the occaisional nugget of gold, explaining how something works.
Their support is probably less than that of some developers on their own sites (I'm thinking of Bioware or Black Isle here) but more than most. I suspect they provide more support immediately after release of a product, when there is more interest and more urgent questions. Bear in mind MTW has been out a fair while now.
I believe you can use the search function to find their posts - Giljaysmith is one of the more frequent posters.

You love this forum, even when the developers are not here. When they do i think they are fair and Rome will kick ass anyway, and the patch is coming so i still love them http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

It depends what your looking for.
Some CA developers have frequently attended these boards and been extremely helpful - especially in terms of modding. The name Target and Eat Cold Steel spring to mind so any searches for their posts will generally provide good info in terms of 'modding MTW details'.
Such CA developers participation often comes in 'bursts'. For example, after the release of MTW 1.0, the 1.1 patch and the run-up to VI's release. This is of course only natural and I presume in the run-up to RTW's release we'll see far more deveoper participation to address the numerous questions that will be posed at that time.
Captain Fishpants also posts a bit but it appears he's more into marketing rather than developement (that's NOT criticism - merely an observation).
GilRaySmith is the most frequent poster to The Org and has been for the last 12 months. Gil can assist with many broad 'developement' queries but I'm not sure exactly what his role is at CA. Not 'hands on' developement I suspect but some role that is very closely related.

(Edited: as regards the '.com' forums you must appreciate that The Org has been going far longer and some '.com' forums, modding, are relatively new. Still they do appear to offer some basic content for interested parties http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif )
