View Full Version : Tidy up units after battle
I have found that this option really does not help since it implies that the computer will mix up depleted units after a battle without keeping the best generals with no stars.
Especially the computer always keep the general who already have a V&V, even if it is a bad one.
On the other hand, if you find the courage to micr-manage tyhe process you can keep the general with high acumen and only mix units that have the same valor. Doing so you can , after a few battles, get units with something like 5-6 valour (without any bonus due to V&V or command level).
Rather a boring process later in the game but it is nice to have a few viking units with valor 9 early in the game.

first thing i do is to cancel this option, always screws your units up so i usualy do it by my self..
it`s a real pain in the a$$, i usually forget until after the first battle in the game. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif
it should be an option in the game controls section, so you can just toggle the switch and leave it on or off for all further campaigns. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
I always turn it off also. I like to combine my units myself to get the high valour units quicker. Also useful for getting rid of generals with bad VnV's.
I wish it was a set-up option as well. I often forget to turn it off until after the first battle.
Something from all three posts...

Hehe, I turn it off as well. I like a certain level of micromanaging and I usually designate 1 sea province as a Assembly Area for depleted units. That way the troop valor climbs dramatically.
I just finished fighting Mongols and my 5 units of JHI gave me two 95% full units of valor 4 JHI http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif After their stellar performance in Khazar they have been given a free vacation in Istanbul http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif The AI would have messed it up really bad.
My 2 cents

I also turn the tidy up units at start and have also forgotten to do it until after the first battle. I like to micromanage my games but unlike others, I think the control is in the right place. Because when you have 2.5k+ men armies it gets a little irrelevant to see if your which of your 12 men royals is gonna get filled and who's gonna go for retraining and at that stage it helps lots to have the tidy units control on. Anyway, if a general already has v&v's or has stars, or is a royal heir, he's not going in the next unit as rank but as commander of the unit, no matter who is integrated into who.
I've seen it in auto tidy as in manual. In other words, you wont have a 1 star general in the same unit as a 2+ star one, or two heirs in the same unit for that matter

As an option in general, it goes off. In some cases I autosort after i have removed the units that I care about - spearment and peasants are there to clog the enemies lines for a bit - and I'm usually not that fussed how they do this.

bah... that is tedious micromanaging. I don't do that. Would you have mixed those automatically, you'd still have your val 9 vikes. Mixed in different units, but still there & kicking ass.
the only thing I hate about it is auto merge merges upgraded units into non upgraded units wich if the unit was well armored and even maybe a sword upgrade or 2 gets merged into a nonarmoured unit and become near worthless
Forgot to memtion that in my oppinion I could care less about the governors, because for the most part good governors are a dime a dozen most of the times unless you have a king with poor stats. I figure I lose a few good governors per campaign but what the hell its just a game and more than likely that little bit of extra cashflow would mean very little in the outcome of the game. I only micromanage when the empire is small and 1 flaw could mean a quick downfall or a loss of a lot of land. Once the empire is secure I don't look to heavily for high accuman guys and once its going because they become corrupt soon enough i just let the comp do it. But to each his own game
Auto merge = must turn off.
Because:
It merges away your currently unassigned future governers.
It merges away all the depleted units that can be retrained in one turn rather than replaced in two turns (max unit size)
It merges upgraded units into non upgraded units.

You never lose heirs from merging them into a unit. Personally I keep it on because it's just a pain in the ass to do it myself.

yes... and upgrades & valour do not disappear what is dispatched is a unit average, but your gold-gold-V6 viking is always here.

I always turn it off. I would rather mix and match the units myself. I prune the least loyal units http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
sorry to sound like a newbie but in the two years ive been playing MTW i have never come across this automerge option. how do i turn it off and on?

@matt_g - This option I think you can find in the control panel which appears by clicking the gray triangle right next to the world map in the left up corner of the strategic map.

I always tidy up manualy. I harks back to the good old days that most of you kiddies don't know anything about; the days before personal computers when gammers had to move little cardboard units around on a hex map according to rules that it took three hours to read and a month to understand. Also there was the joy of hand painting your units forged from lead and going down to the local hobby shop on a Saturday and engaging in a massave four way battle on a battle field spread across ten or twelve ping-pong tables. This background is why I rarely whine about suposed missing game features and/or "bugs". Those who complain so much should try to write a game, any game, even a paper one with little cardboard units that you have to tidy up with your own little pinkies. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
