It's the 1230's I'm in my current Egyptian camp. Armenia is hit by the GH for the third time. No prob. I just came out of defeating 11,000 sicilians in Greece, so 5,000 mongols should be to grounds for worrying. Nevertheless I never finished the battle.
The battle began as ussual, the GH throwing infantry first, it's general high tailing it to his women (or boys, dunno)or staying on the field staring at the sky. Inmediatelly came several waves of archers and chargers and after escorting them out of the field, Iexpected more foot soldiers and some naphta throwers.
But this time a few curious things happened. First I withdrew 3 badly mauled, camel warrior units just to later (about one hour later)learn that one of the camel sprites got stuck on a tree and remained on an endless stationary gallop, yet no camel icons remained on the lower screen.
At one time the enemy 'waves' stoped and when I saw only 1 Steppe heavy cav., 2 mongol archers and 3 MHC I expected them to be the last of the lot.
But after routing the 6 units I lost track of the steppe heavies. I know all went home but they were the last to break and run, 9 riders remained in that unit, yet I saw the mongols reach safety but completely lost the steppe guys.
And to top it all, units began to appear one by one, and I mean I had to beat one unit in order for another to appear and it took a good 5 min. in real time after one unit left completely, for the reinforcement to show up. I must have defeated 10 units that way until no more units came out.
But the battle didn't end. I began looking all over the place for any stragglers but all I found was the lonely camel warrior. Except for the dead, there remained no enemy on the field.
I had to exit the battle, which I hate, but it was almost 3 in the morning and had to work today.
I plan to fight that battle again, but I wanted to know if anyone experienced anything like this before.
Cheers.

I know sometimes when I try to withdraw a unit it becomes stuck on the edge of the map. Sometimes halting the withdrawal, so the unit marches back onto the map, then withdrawing again clears this problem up. Sometimes it seems path routine always picks the same bugged path and I end up fighting with only 15 units. Perhaps this is what happened to the computer only it's not smart enough to try and unstick the unit, hence it is caught in purgatory and the battle never ends.

edit: this seems to happen more often on maps with trees on the edge. Also, i've had a case in a bridge battle where one man in a unit got stuck (in all the corpses perhaps? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif ) so while the rest of the unit moved around that one guy just stood there spinning his feet but never able to rejoin his unit.

Quite aggravating when it happens. I think an AI unit just gets "stuck" trying to exit (like yours do http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif )

I once swept an entire map with my units line abreast to try to find a hidden AI unit...nope, map clear

The battle was huge and yes I've had trouble with units retreating in forests often enough but never had a unit reported as withdrawn, yet the lone rider is still there. I've also had units stuck on bridges, gates and buildings' corners when they have to make sharp turns. About half the men are left running in place.
Let me just add that this kind of battle you can't finish is the first time in almost a year of playing at least 3 times a week and after dozens of battles, big and small. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I wonder if the problems aren't related. I have had a couple of battles when there were definitely no enemy on the map but nothing happened. I just put timer on fast and walked away. When I came back battle had ended. Not sure how long it took but think it is only way to fix.

I have had units withdrawing get stuck in trees - I just press HALT button - it should be flashing in top left corner of screen and you have to keep hitting it. Unit will return to the battlefield and you can then send him to a section on map without trees and withdraw him normally. Annoying but better than trying to fight a battle with less than 16 units.

But I don't think this caused the delay at end of battle. I have only ever seen end of battle delayed when AI has (had) lots of troops and assume it is something to do with all the reinforcements it had (but not anymore&#33http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
