I know the HOF awards are a while off, but I've been thinking that we should have some new categories for rewarding all the creative effort that goes on in the Mead Hall & Throne Room. Over on the EU2 forums, their AAR (after action report) forum is chockablock full of outstanding writing. The best get rewarded with an oscAAR, a most suitable prize methinks. BTW, if you haven't already, I suggest you head on over there and check some of them out here (http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=61) . An excellent one to start with is History Park: Who Wants To Be Napoleon (http://www.europa-universalis.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=52885)

So I was thinking that we should do something similar here, with the following categories

Best account of a PBEM reign. Ones that spring to mind are SeljukSinans Yusuf I and Maniacs Umarian mushrooms (both in the Almohad VI thread).

Best PBEM thread Pretty self explanatory really, I would only include completed dynsties

Best short story

Best Story The difference between the two being length, obviously http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I would have the relevant mods - KukriKahn, Shadeswolf, Demon of Light and frogbeastegg nominate 3 or 5 of what they regarded as the best from 2003 for us to choose from.

Whaddya think? Mods, I guess you need to be involved in this too, cos if you don't agree it won't happen

I just posted in the Mead Hall version, but since everyone else seems to be here I shall move over http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif Anyway I'll just copy and paste my answer over:

It sounds like a good idea and I think the two forums would benefit from the event. I would recommend just a couple of alterations:

-Instead of the mods nominating candidates why not let the patrons decide? After all they are the main audience and there will be more participation. AFAIK this is how the HOF 2002 worked.

-What about limiting entries? If the mods choose candidates then they should not be allowed to enter for the sake of fairness. This needs to be decided and set in stone early on.

Anyway if this did go ahead we might be able to get a couple of special icons for the winners, something like the ones for HOF 2002 would be good. Speaking of HOF is story writing going to be a category in this years HOF? If it is then maybe this event should be postponed until then, otherwise the event will happen twice this year and people will be able to grab two awards for the same thing http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif However if this event morphed into the golden quill (or similar) awards this wouldn't be a problem.

We already have quite a number of good write-ups and stories, and this will help improves the quality of our stories...

The problem then becomes that for things like best short story or best PBEM reign, you could have dozens of nominations, and it might only take 3 or 4 votes to stand out from the crowd. Plus I figured that the mods would have seen most of the entries through the year. But then again, the patrons might have longer memories than the mods http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif. If you do decide to go down the road of all patrons being allowed to nominate, the mods should certainly be allowed to nominate too.

I think it would be unfair for the likes of yourself or Shadeswolf or DemonOfLight who are all excellent writers to be excluded from the awards process because you are a mod. Obviously you wouldn't be allowed to nominate yourself, but I think your fellow mods should still be allowed to nominate you if they feel you are worthy. I don't see you travelling to California to intruege with KK & DoL in a smoke filled room about how to nominate yourself http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I was not aware that there already was a writing award in the HOF awards (now I have to do a search and see who got it&#33http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif, but I think it would make sense for it to be expanded to include the above proposed awards.

OK, I've searched the archives and found the list of HOF 2002 winners here (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=20;t=6085;hl=hall+of+fame), but I see no writing award...or have I got you said all confused? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wacko.gif

Sorry Mount Suribachi, I seem to have confused you. Beware a frog that has had a headache (I think I banged my head - I have a massive bruise at the back of my skull but I can't remember anything that would have caused it. No I wasn't drunk - this little froggy doesn't drink ) for three days, they loose half their usual word power I shall try again.

It wasn't in last years event but I would assume new categories will be added to this years and in light of our new forums I am expecting story telling to be one of them. If this category is added to the HOF then there will be two HOF awards going for literature so it would be a little misleading and repetitive. However if this event were renamed into something more literary (aka Golden Quill, Bards Choice etc) this wouldn't be a problem.

I have suggested limited entry because I believe in that old adage never let the judges enter the competition, it would make the competition vulnerable to charges of cronyism and give a bad impression to outsiders and newbies who haven't been here long enough to know that we would never nominate ourselves above others. Imagine how it would appear if you came here for the first time and half the winners in this competition were the judges who had put themselves forward and chosen themselves - it wouldn't look good. We are here to serve and protect the org and if that means staying out of a competition to avoid any chance, no matter how small, of accusations of unfairness then we should be glad to do it. Being a moderator (to me, this is just a personal opinion) means that we can never do anything that may reflect badly on our community.

It may not be fair that we are not entered in the competition but in many ways we already have the highest award you could give us - the job of being a moderator and all the trust and respect that entails http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif If you really want (and if the other mods and patrons want) us to enter having the patrons make the nominations and voting would prevent any accusations of bias being made and solve the whole problem quite neatly. Of course as you said it opens a whole new can of worms regarding draws etc.

How did nomination and voting work in the HOF 2002? I have only seen the results so I don't know how people were selected and voted for. A repeat of that system could be the answer here.

Anyway all this is just my personal opinion and I am just one of the people who needs to decide, I am interested in what the other mods (and patrons - your opinions would be valuable here too) have to say on the matter.

I hope that is more coherent, my head is still pounding and I feel sick http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif

Frogbeastegg: It is worth noting that you and I are not quite true moderators. We're more hybrids than anything else. Our only moderator-like ability is to close a topic. In principle though, I agree with the idea of judges not entering themselves. Too much potential for messiness there. Besides, if I could nominate 3 people, I already know who I'd nominate and I'm not even close to including myself. Should I state now who I'd nominate?

Well, its not quite HOF time, so probly best to keep it under your inquisitors hat for now http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Demon - You are right, we most certainly are not true mods but outsiders don't know how limited our powers (close topic, move topic out of our forum, sticky topic and admin access to the filemanger for hosting patrons pictures) are. With the title and the name plate in these forums we do look quite similar to real mods and this introduces the chance that someone will mistake us for real moderators, leading back to the situation above. We did get a lot of a true mods responsibilities though.

Mount Suribachi - I shall keep my notes under my kabuto until HOF time

We can do all that? Have you done any of those yourself? Could I get a PM explaining how to do those(if it can really be done?

Back on topic: When is HOF time?

frogbeastegg

Yup, we can do all that with the possible exception on the filemanager access - I have that as part of the Mead Hall and I'm not sure who else has access apart from TosaInu. I'm writing a PM with a explaination now http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Last years HOF ended in January, at least that is what the results topic in the EH said before it vanished.

I think HOF for writing is a fine idea. There needs to be an established and published cut-off date for nominations.
