I havent followed much of the development of RTW - what is the reasoning behind four Roman factions? Do they start out allied and work together? What about different germanic/ british/ gaulish tribes? Thx

There are probably a couple of reasons for the different roman factions.

First, factions within the Republic started more wars than the Senate did. By having three playable roman factions RTW can mimick the "opportunistic" wars started by powerful members of the Roman upper class.

Second, several pretty massive civil wars took place during Rome's republican and imperial history. The biggest? was after Julius Caesar's assassination. A great way of allowing this gameplay-wise is to have Rome broken up into different factions.

Having the germanic/celtic tribes divided is for gameplay reasons. Even if just the AI controlled one "northern tribes" faction they would quickly overwhelm Rome by numbers alone.

Probably this answer:

The Senate is given the Role the Pope had in MTW (rant&'control' ), while the four other roman Factions are made to display the many Civilwars and simplyfie in-Game display why the Romans can fought at so many diffrent places at the same time...

But I see this as rather 'simplyfied' (stupid) through the Political Systems of RTW-Factions in history differed so much that the Absolutistic Control from STW and MTW doesn't fit

One Point they could at least make: Give the Barbarian, nrth European Factions the "HRE-Advance" that they'll simply elect a new leader if their Dynasty dies out This can't be made for Romans, through having the "Gens Julia" as a Faction makes it easy to see the Faction MUST die out without the Julian Family http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
