I ask this because I bought my copy off ebay and wasnt paying attention so I ended up with a Thai version. The game is in english but the manual is in Thai...lol. I also dont know the strategy map hotkeys except m for combining units and enter to end the year, I tried looking in the options for setting hotkeys but they are mostly for battles. So now I have alot units that are sitting around with inferior equipment and some hold titles so I dont really want to disband them.
Chris
Do you mean for example could you take simple spearmen and upgrade them to pikemen? Unfortunately no, once you build something you are stuck with it, even when it becomes outdated.
I usually use those units for garrison duty. Some provinces require large garrisons to keep them pacified, recently conquered provinces for example. The outmoded units will suffice to keep the population quiet, but they might not be much good in a fight. BTW...to check on how likely your provinces are to revolt hit SHIFT. Green, no revolt likely. Tan, somewhat likely. Red, very likely.
If a unit gets mauled in battle you can rebuild it to its starting strength. Open the unit build list for the province that the units are in, if those units are buildable there, open the army list, and drag and drop the mauled unit into the first open build slot in the build list. It will cost less to rebuild than to build an entirely new unit of the same type. I also think that you retain some of the mauled unit's valor. If the province can't build the unit move it to a province that can.

That is what I needed to know thanks alot... also thanks for the explanation of what the color codes meant, I've been hitting shift for a year now and had no idea what it meant...lol. So thanks alot
Chris
hit V and you can see if you control an ocean, green you do, red your enemy is in it. Hit C to hide castles. Hit X once to hide enemy units, twice to hide your units, and three times to hide all, four to bring all back. I think that's the right order, play with it and see. Those are some that I use alot. Look around for FAQ's and you might find some more. I think that some info might be in the downloads section.

if those units hve no sword or shield symbols on the unit icons that means that they have no armour or upgraded weapons on them.
there are four levels of upgrade; brown, black, silver and gold.
to get them you need to build consecutively more expensive metalsmiths and armourers, and you need to build larger and larger castles to get those upgraded buildings in the first place.
move all of those units that you want to upgrade to the closest province that has the best upgraded buildings you need, and place them in the castle, then open the build unit screen and drag them into it, then every unit up have placed in the unit build screen will take one turn to be upgraded with new weapons and armour.
giving them a new lease of life, but eventually they will become obselescent and will only be fit for garrison duty as Dhepee said.
hope that gets you on the road. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

Dhepee...Thanks for the extra tips I'll give those a try.
Katar...thats exactly what I was reffering to as in equipment upgrades. So can I assume now that since I always play the Danes and alway's take Sweden first I can send troops made in provinces without iron deposits to sweden for the upgrade ?

got it exactly. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
you will have to build all the infrastructure to get your upgrades, but getting your hands on any province that has iron is a priority on the path to better upgrades.
one downside to upgrades is that the better they get, the quicker your soldiers will get tire, this can be a major problem when your have the highest upgrades in armour and are fighting in the dessert, in sush a situation you might be better off with soldier carrying less armour. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

Outstanding, I wish I had joined this forum a long time ago http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif. As far as stamina is concerned because of brightness problems with the game ( in battles I can barely see my units and it kinda ruins the whole feeling ) I have resorted to autoresolve all battles in my campaigns, from what I have read in the forums I know this may be frowned upon by some but due to the fact that I currently have a 500mhz cpu I am sure slow down would be a big problem in real time battles. For the year I've had the game I have never attempted a large scale real time battle during a campaign, I have played some custom battles but I always reduce the florins to 1500. I do hope to remedy this though at some time in the future.
Chris
What do you mean by brightness problem? I've never encountered it.
Also, if you decrease the unit sizes in the options menu and turn off all the effects, like birds and smoke )just look around the options menu and video menu) you might be able to play a battle on your machine.

i don`t remember if MTW has adjustable settings for GAMMA CORRECTION, as already mentioned check out your settings in the video and game options menus.
if there is an adjustment for gamma correction, use it.
turn off as many fancy effects as you can, and do reduce the unit size.
are you getting glare on the screen from another light source?
that will also make it hard to see things.
give all of them a try and see if it gets any better. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Well Dhepee it's the strangest thing. I'll start by saying that from my experience with STW (which I got the same time as MTW but have never played in-depth because of this problem) I have found that all my games are very dark regardless of my desktop settings. I never really noticed it until STW because it and MTW unlike many other games dont have a brightness slider bar in the vid options. Some of my other games are Diablo2, Baldurs Gate 1&2, Warlords Battlecry 1&2 and most of these games except WB 1&2 have gamma sliders and brightness sliders...well D2 has a contrast slider that does the trick so I never really noticed until STW. With WB I found that if I change the resolution in-game it brightens right up but unfortunately that doesnt work with my Total War games... this also works with Battle Realms but not S or MTW. I have tried many things like vid drivers different directx versions I even called the tech support for my vid card and the guy had never heard of such a problem so I have decided it's just something I have to deal with until I get a new system. I have a 2000 model Hewlett Packard pavilion with integrated intel video and I think it has something to do with that because even with the integrated video diabled in BIOS and device manager when I go to PCPitstop the intel registers as the active driver but the performance is clearly the TnT. I've kinda thrown up my hands at this point. As far as the unit sizes and smoke and whatnot I have reduced or disabled all extras.Thanks for the interest though.
One thing that is funny but infuriating is that when I exit the game as it transfers from the exit screen to the desktop I get a brief glimpse of what it should look like.

It seems we were posting simultaneously Katar. MTW does have a gamma setting and mine is all the way up it allows to atleast see the strat map, unit and building windows and such. Hopefully my above post will clarify my problem.

man is that depressing or not http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pissed.gif
you seem to have gone through every option available.
sometimes things are just totally incompattible, no matter what you do.
time for a new computer? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/idea.gif
have you tried talking about this in the Apothecary (i think that`s the technical section) ? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Lol... yeah depressing could be used to describe it. I did a forum wide search for display problems and couldnt find anything similar. Oh well I'm still playing and as you said it's time for a new computer. This time I'm steering clear of anything integrated.

unfortunately intergrated machines can leave you high and dry after a few years. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif
if i couldn`t play MTW unless i had to resort to autoresolve, i would have given it up long ago. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif
hope you can get something good worked out. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif
Darruth;
Unless your totally without free slots, I'd say even a pci vid card would be worth your investment. Even a 32mb card should help.
This presumes that you haven't gone the up-graded drivers route already,eh?

L`zard;
I have a 32mb TnT2... not the best I know but I tried to upgrade to a 128mb Geforce4 card and found that my power supply was inadequate for the newer cards. Its funny I had the card bought and paid for, 2nd day shipping and then I decide to take a closer look at the requirements and find that the card needed a 250watt power supply. So I had to send it back and settle for the 32mb. You are right in your presumption as per my driver upgrades.

there IS a gamma correction in mtw, it's under options in the main menu. and can't play battles in mtw totally suck, it's the heart of the game. i hope u solve this problem soon or get a new computer. try best buy, they have great computers under $1000 that i gurantee can play mtw
good luck http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif
Darruth;
Have you considered replacing the power supply?
Or building your own? It's not that difficult. Any questions that arise can generally be googled.
You could prolly strip your present machine for some things, and replace them with superior parts as funds become available.
BigHairyMan is entirely correct-battles is what this game is 80% about. Your situation is a dirty shame, dude.
L`zard
You don't really need the manual.
You can find all of the info in here (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=15;t=9203). It's way better than the manual.
