Yesterday I was reminded that a feature of MTW was the massive 4 way battles that could take place. In single player, I think one has occured that I can remember.
To rectify this, I think in essence could be done very simply - albeit it would require tomany changes to be instigated prior to RTW: the ability to ask allies or neutrals for help in a province (or in RTW a battlefield), with possibly the ability to offer money either before or afterwards as an incentive. One's influence could also so raise and fall on whether one keeps one's promises or not, as well as allowing for far more interesting battles.
Although I imagine that this i merely a pipe dream, I hope that something like it is going to be added to the game. It would take extra coding to add, but would greatly add to the richness of the fights - and would enable the weaker powers to have more influence at crucial junctions, especially if armies can enter the battlefield on different sides...

Just a thought...

I think I remember seeing something about this. I think they do plan to overhaul the ally thing.

I agree it would be much better if they did. I once had a very cool battle where the Mongols attacked me, the Russians jumped in on the Mongol side, and the Byzantines and someone else (can't remember who-- maybe Poles) jumped in on my side. It was truly the Battle of Five Armies

Unfortunately, stuff like that so rarely happens.

Well, with the complex diplomatic functions RTW will have, something like that should be possible. And remember that you can bring in more than one army into a battle yourself. BTW, isn`t it interesting that this features was extensively discussed at the Org long before the announcement of RTW? Maybe the devs are listening to us. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wacko.gif

Translation from the .com of an interview in the German game rag Gamestar:

Diplomcy:
(THANKS CA), is more like in Civ 3, you can sum up proposals, add things.
Here the example mentioned: "Give me military passage for your territory for 10 years, also trading rights and 1000 Dinars tribute, for this you get the city Tarentum and I will attack your enemy Macedonia for the next five years.
Streatgic units mentioned here, spy and diplomat.
