I'm thinking of making a middle east mod.
First I will make a new campaign map - this will be middle east with asia minor, all the way to India, Aral Sea , Caspian Sea, and also "horn of Africa" - territories which are now known as Somalia and Ethiopia.
But which period?

1990 onwards? The Gulf War and Oil Era?

SHIT

I charged into this thread, arms and legs flying and with a broad and agressive smirk on my face, thinking it was the first Political thread I'd seen in the Dungeon

Alas, it's just another modding thread http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

Ok, considering the campaign map you are proposing the obvious period would suggest a 300/400BC type mod. This would be compatable with the Persian/Greek wars, the campaigns of Alexander and suchlike.

MTW already has several units (Bifs) that could feasibly be used for such units, and DJ (Duke John) is also in the process of creating Greek units that would assist.

However, bear in mind that an immense amount of work has already been done in this area by Komninos (and flip and others), and Komninos/DJ are in the process of doing a similar type mod.

Therefore, you may find duplication of effort in such a mod for that period.

Personally, if your interested in the middle east I would tend to go for a localised Crusader/Saracen type mod, based arounf the 1100-1200AD period.

Providing you can find a suitable map then such a mod would not suffer from having to create entirely new units and graphics, but a map of the middle east region with several city states (Christian and Muslim) and many more regions would offer fresh MTW campaign without the grief associated with changing everything in MTW

LoS and myself were doing something of the sorts several months ago and there are still a lot of things hanging around.

Bascially, whatever you wish to do with creating a new mod there is only 1 important criteria. Do what interests you, as opposed to what may interest others. Its the only way to to progress.

Welly

I should have been more precise with those 3 choices.
The ancient period I was thinking about would be sth like at least 1000 BC, so there's not going to be any greek/macedonian faction. Personally I think the beginnins of Islam would be more interesting. The main idea of this mod is to focus on muslim factions and muslim world.

I know about hellenic mod, and I can ensure that my mod will be sth very different.

I think the 1000BC mod would rock.

You know, Islam is already in the original MTW.

So I hope it will be an ancient mod with hethits and so on http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Yes it is, but there are only 3 muslim factions in the original MTW. And my idea would be to have not less than 15 muslim factions. Also playing as muslims in MTW is a kind of disadvantage with all those crusades marching towards your lands. I think it wouldn't be far from the truth to say that MTW is about medieval christian europe.

Well i was thinking the Ancients would be far more fun and interesting if you were to make it the start of islam it would end up being something like the Turks Vs Byzantines, this would end up being a rather boring game after ten minutes and the point of this type of mod is not to make it more boring then the original game. it is to make interesting so if you were to make it ancient you could include 3 empires of grecce, the egyptians, the persians the hittites and maybe some factions like babylonia ect.
but this is only my opinion.
thanks dessa

If you want to do a mod with a lot of Muslim factions, you should look at the period when the Abbasid Caliphate fell apart. This would put your mod in the 900's. The Abbasid empire collapsed and local dynasties took control of their former territories. Besides an Abbasid rump state in Baghdad, you'd have the Hamdanids in Syria, the Iranian Buyids, Saffarid and Samanid states in Khurasan, various successor states in Egypt, resurgent Byzantines, Kurds, the Seljuk Turks, etc.

You'd have to stretch your map to include Northern India and Central Asia, the Middle East, and at least a good chunk of North Africa. Spain, Sicily and Southern Italy could also be included, but then you'd have to deal with Catholic factions - although one or two (Spanish and Normans?) couldn't hurt too much.

There would be a few new units necessary, too. I've got to run now, but if you're interested I could provide more info and suggest some resources.

Talk to you later,

For now the only catholic faction that may appear in my mod are Crusaders States. There will be two orthodox factions - The Byzantines and The Armenians. And I think that would be all about christian factions.

if you include crusader states, instead of calling them just franks like the muslims did during the day you would have to include france, england, HRE and maybe KT & KH so you can't just have crusader states, and due to how poorly linked these states would be they would be slaugtered, and the first crusade didn't happen until 1096 and armenians didn't turn christian until after the first crusade so to have crusaders and armenians you game would have to be set in the early middle ages after the highest strength of islam
Thanks dessa

I know that crusader states were divided, but still there will be only ONE crusader faction. Name of this faction will be Outermerer or just Crusader States. As for Armenians - I am affraid that you are wrong saying that they became christians only after the first crusade - they were christians long before that, since year 301 AD . And the mod will be propably set in times after fall of the Abbasid Caliphate.
