View Full Version : difficulty?
Personally I only play on expert, and I find that not to be enough of a challenge even with mods that make it harder, but only because the AI is predictable and sucks at tactical battles http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif
And you peoples think...?

Expert has no diplomacy involved, everyone just remains at war with you until their end.
With hard you can actually make peace, so it's hard for me. I don't notice any difference in the battle AI between hard and expert.
I always play at expert, and I find that the diplomacy treats you reasonably up until it looks like you're going to sweep the board, which is when the AI refuses to make peace or declare a cease-fire. Maybe that *is* realistic, as in real-life if there was a country that obviously wants to rule the world, other countries would do everything in their power to stop it.
i vary my games between normal and hard, which suits me just fine. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

always on expert, and there should be at least one more difficulty level - sth more than just an expert. . .

I agree. Its still manageable on expert.

Maybe they need a guru level? I enjoy the game on expert, even when the AI does something stupid like charge my pikemen head on with royal knights while I'm flanking them with my billmen. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Greetings and welcome Hobot.
My first campaign I usually go with hard and then expert after that.

I always play on expert with Glory Goals. Isn't any fun if you're not facing the constant threat of annihilation.
I'm currently playing Poland in the Late era. I was so proud of the AI today. A Mongol horde actually pinned me frontally with horse archers then rode their 'charging' cav ALL the way around the edge of the map to strike the rear of my army. Of course I still slaughtered them... but it was nice to see. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I used to play on hard because I heard that the comp was worse on building empires on expert, but the last games I started to play only on expert. But I would probably need to download a mod to get enough challenge.
It would be more fun if the comp could really put up a challenge after the first 50 years.
The comp seems get larger/better empires in 2.0 though. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Yeah, guru sounds just fine to me. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
We all want the game to be more difficult - we're all MTW freaks http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif , but I guess I can live with that. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

Boy, I'm going to go hide under my desk since I'm getting my butt handed to me on Normal....

Don't look at it that way Archlight. Have pity on those who find Expert too easy. They are the ones who will get bored with the game. You, however, will find it a challenge for a long time to come. Be happy. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif
I also play on expert but I would prefer to play even on easy if the AI was better http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
Not that the AI is so bad but because after a few (or many) games you can predict what's gonna happen next.
PS: I would much prefer to wait for a patch that would make the AI better........ I say it again: I would like the patch to improve the AI..... I'll say it again: ....... Oh never mind, no one is listening http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif

find a level that you find satisfying, and add in the odd game of greater dificulty from time to time, just for the hell of it.
so long as you enjoy it, that`s all that matters.

Thanks guys, I was just kidding. I'm fine with playing on normal for now. I'm sure eventually I'll get the hang of it and move up.
It's more the lesser starting funds that scare me than the AI.

Hard...maybe its just me but sometimes the battles seem more difficult in hard. Often in expert I'm wondering what is the ai doing ? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif

I would dearly love for the ai to be improved upon. Often times it seems that the first 4 or 5 times the ai attaks one of my provinces it brings just enough troops to get sent running back to their own province holding their mail up like skirts and screaming like women Even if they have a massive amount of troops to send the ai seems to send only one third more than me. which of course is not really all that threatening. And also why cant the ai build anything resembleing a decent tech tree? It builds totally unneccessary buildings instead of trying reach a strategic building quickly. I want to have different degrees of opponents, such as maybe one really threatening faction that is superior to all the others. Let me know if anyone agrees or has any other ideas.

Expert only. I'm never quite having as much fun as when I am being forced to take the defensive and struggle simply to survive.
I seems to me that when you increase the difficulty, instead of getting better AI, your opponents units simply become stronger and more difficult to kill. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/dizzy.gif I would like to see that change for RTW.

Expert all the way
The AI needs all the help it can get when my armies get going...
And of course the Golden Horde's arrival is so much larger on expert (all the more Mongols to mince) http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

WesW's MedMod 3.09 Beta is for you then my friend. It is a must have, makes MTW a whole new game...well no it just takes the old and improves everything about it IMHO, Wes is da man...with too much free time, and a great cause to commit it to http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif The full version of this mod should come out soon, but the Beta is very un-beta like in its lack of problems, mostly a couple of balancing issues for the main release I think. His website is wes.apolyton.net go there and download it, there's a whole discussion on it in the Alch's lab in the Dungeon you may wanna check out after playing it for a bit too http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pat.gif
I play normal, but with MedMod 3 beta and so I can't win it. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif
I play Expert on unmodded MTW 1.1 and I am playing Hard (first campaign) on MedMod v1.85.
MedMod is the way to go, no more peasant stacks, much harder game.

Woo hoo im one of the four people who play on easy :-)
altho maybe by the time you read this post there may be more of us.
ok so why easy.
well first ive onyl been playing the game for a couple of months so hence im still getting to learn all the factions, i have my favourites, but dont want to dismiss any faction for future harder games until ive got use to them.
secondly Im a coward :-), well not so much a coward as I like to play defensively and hence I want as much money as I can get to build a force that can at least hold each of my provinces and i guess thats why Ive not done to well with the HRE at present, altho ill keep trying
Thirdly, there is still enough of a challenge for me at the present, without getting totally overun and thuskeeping my interest in the game. I can hold my own with some factions on Normal level, however the next campaign i'll play on easy, to give me a confidence boost more than anything.
disadvantages of playing easy - get into a false sense of security, ie you get use to a set game plan especially on the battle field, and will these tactics of mine work at the higher level. That i suppose is the challenge that I will eventually have to face one day, soon, maybe :-)

Nothing but easy. When I win, I have fun. And the point of playing games is to have fun, right?
Expert on STW.
Just moved up to Expert level for Viking campaign of MTW VI.
Just moved up to Normal level for Early+ campaigns of MTW VI.
