View Full Version : How many hours straight...

When I returned from Korea, my wife went on a 1 week trip a week after I had returned. I bought 2 cases of Mountain Dew, mixed it with some vodka and played for about 36 hours straight before passing out and breaking my keyboard with my head. So, I often wonder, how many of you have stopped your life for this game in an extended amount of time? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
I was playing the Italians that game....

Dave, you must have a hard head http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

I played for 18 hours, as the English. I had to stop when I was invading Switzerland, fell asleep, and lost the battle when the time ran out. The AI never counterattacked, once again proving that it is worthless.

The day i bought MTW, I played it from about 7pm that night, until about 4 or 5 in the mornign, went to bed, woke up at about 7, booted it up straight away, and played non stop til about 6 that night when my gf encouraged me to stop playing

I can easily remember some 12-14 hours sessions. But that's when I remember what I did. I must have played a bit longer sometimes as I have a very faint memory of some weekends and I'm sure I was playing non stop
By the way, do you think that we could the same thing if we got paid for it or would this kill the fun?

Along time ago in a galaxy far far away a humble IT project manager spent his weekends playing games for hours and hours, often thinking wouldn't it be great to get paid for this.

So one day he left his IT job and entered the pandoras box of the games industry.

Although he would never go back, loved what he did and never regretted the move that he made. He sometimes wonders where all his gameplaying time has gone.....

I don't think I've ever managed an epic like Dave but I'd say a good 12 hours, sleep and 12 hours. This of course pales into insignificance when compared to my Championship Manager Exploits. A good 28 hours I once managed on that one, got up at 8 and played through to midday the next day before deciding I needed to sleep. My dreams were then disturbed by horrible visions of the CM interface.

BTW rather than Mountain Dew & vodka my drink of choice on this particular marathon was Pepsi Max, the high caffine drink of the gods, can keep a man going without sleep for up to 2 days at a time.

Done some more digging and thought this was a good thread (started by me of course, my best fan) and wanted to know what any of the RTW fans had to say. So, how long was your longest session of STW/MTW/RTW?:2thumbsup:

Well however old this thread may be, it's still a good one :2thumbsup:

As for me, I really don't know, I've spent sunny days indoors because of Rome, and Medieval, but I guess I just lost track of time. I never actually broke my keyboard with my head so to say.

Also, it's the first time I've seen MonkeyMan. I always thought I knew everyone after spending 2 years of my life here !

I think I managed 18 hours on RTW, alas, my body isnt what it used to be and succumbed to sleep at 8am the next day. From what I remember of MTW, t'was probably the same.

I don't think I've ever done an all-nighter. Probably the longest I've gone was 16-18 hours. Now that I'm older and grayer, I doubt I've gone longer than 10-12 hours. ~D

As for me, In the old days of Shogun and the clan I probably spent 10 hours straight.

I remember once I went to bed at 6PM UK time so I could get up at 2AM to play people in other parts of the World.

I used to play in longish stints (about 4-5 hours) but these days I just play in short 1-2 hour bursts because I'm also playing Inselkampf which has got me quite hooked, and I have to keep checking to see what's happened (usually nothing lol).

When I first got MTW = 22 hrs
When I got VI = 22 hrs

I often boot up the game when I wake up, and play intermittantly while doing other stuff. Fight a battle, do the dishes, play a couple of years, fix the car, although I don't think those days count.

I could easily do 12 hours for Shoggie or MTW at a weekend. Rome doesnt capture my attention so much and i get bored after a couple of hours.

I remember about four years ago i played in a tournament for Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear which lasted about 30 hours, due too both teams camping. At one point my whole team was AFK for about an hour, and much too our suprise we were all alive when we got back! :laugh4:

4-5 hour sessions probly the max. Did quite a few of those back in the day on MTW - remember when battles lasted hours rather than minutes?

These days with Mrs Suribachi around, I'm lucky to get 2-3 hours in a sesh.

Yikes! I've played over 14 hours, with only brief breaks for snacks or bathroom stops, and that was on just one battle. One of those marathon defenses against the Golden Horde, outnumbered 10-1, where your missle troops all run out of ammo, and you pray for reinforcements to arrive soon - just so you can have some troops that aren't exhausted! ~

I had a battle against the Horde like that once, although I was only outnumbered by about 2 to 1. ~D The other difference was that in my case, I started the battle late in the evening (I'd been playing since early afternoon). After several hours, I realized it was past 3 a.m., and that I desperately needed some sleep. I therefore took the rare step of pausing my game mid-battle to hit the sack. I woke up the next morning around 10-11 a.m., and resumed fighting. I finally drove the surviving Mongols from the field around 2:00 that afternoon. To reward myself, I took a shower and ordered pizza for lunch. ~;p

All told, I think the battle lasted around 8 hours; but that's includes pausing. Had I played it straight through, it probably only would've been 4 or 5 hours. (Yes, I pause battles a lot in my games!) If I hadn't needed to stop and sleep in the middle of battle, I probably would've set a personal record for a single session of MTW. As it is, I still played Medieval for over 14 hours straight that first day, and probably another 10-12 hours the second day (I continued on playing after I'd showered and eaten that next day). Ah yes, those were the days!

Played RTW once, as the Brutii, and managed 20 hours straight, including taking meals during play. I managed a few rest breaks during the game, but very few. It is amazing how addictive these games can be. :juggle2:

My very first Medieval campaign started on a Friday evening and ended sometime in the wee hours of Monday morning. There may have been snacks and cat-naps involved, my memory is kind of fuzzy. I do distinctly remember thousands of pushy Mongols knocking on my door and demanding I give them my house. Wait...that was in the game, wasn't it?

My longest battle was 7 hours . Funny thing is that is wasn't against the emerging Horde on the edge of the stepps , it was the bloated French trying to sweep me from Denmark {I was Byzantium and had taken the Nordic provinces} . I had been playing a good long while before that battle if memory serves .

I played many long hauls in WWIIOL moons ago ; once guarded a bunker from the murder hole with my trusty MP40 for well over 8 hours {won't do guard duty these days , I did enough before for a lifetime !} .

Done similar stretches with NWN and lately Dungeons & Dragons Online {Argonessen Server as a Human Ranger named Hauer} .

Mind you , the longest I think I've spent on a game is not playing , but rather , modding it :2thumbsup:

For any TW game, the longest I've played (in consecutive hours, w/o sleep) is probably around 15. RTW and MTW both (though I've discovered I like MTW a lot better).

The longest of any game is probably about 24 hours. It was the first day I had Star Wars Galaxies, played it a lot, realized it sucked/was expensive/was really laggy, and then quit. I haven't really played it again.

I've had a few marathons with NWN as well. Sorceresses are hawt (insert leering smilie here).

In the recent past, 12 hours straight ... no pauses. I got HoMM V, installed it, and kept playing. I quit when I got a headache. Then I got another headache when I rememberd the exams for which I wasn't studying.:wall:

Sometimes I do so hate these things.

I've never played for more than 5 hours in a row, but at one point I went a whole month where I played 3-4 hours a day, everyday. Of course this happened during the school year and the drop in my grades reflected. On the plus side, my knowledge of medieval history sky rocketed.

IIRC, it was a Turkish campaign where I hadn't teched-up very smartly, so was facing the Horde with a less-than-ideal mix of troops. My men were often on the verge of routing, so I had to use every terrain advantage and tactical trick in the book to keep them holding just a little while longer. It was a very near-run thing, extremely tense throughout the whole battle. When it was over, I was completely drained... :sweatdrop:

If I´ve got the time, I´ll play four to six hours straight, but usually less, around two to three hours. Less isn´t worth the trouble of starting ;)

My longest single battle occured yesterday, 165 minutes, defending Niccea against the Crusader State, me playing as Spain. I suppose it could have gone on longer, but the time limit ran out. That battle was one of the reasons why I keep the time limit switched on.
