It all depends on the size of your hard drive. What I have done is to install MTW with VI, the standard version. I have also installed it again, in a folder called Napoleon, and downloaded Lord of Storms' Napoleon Total War (NTW) mod, which is awesome. There is also the Wesmod series, I haven't used it myself but I've heard great things about it.
I've installed yet a third time and I use that as my modding platform. If you go to the Dungeon there is a great thread started by DOC about making the AI build better units. There is also really great information on how to mod units, unit stats, buildings, campaigns, etc. Just download the gnome editor, otherwise you'll go nuts in the text files. It is a lot of fun to create your own units or to tweak your favorite factions so that they get a greater variety of units. Or even to create wholly new versions of units. I am working on a Flamberge' Swordsdmen unit based off of Swabian Swordsmen.
I would highly recommend NTW and the changes that DOC suggests, if you are into modding. Also, do some stuff on your own. It's not that hard to make simple changes and adds a whole new dimension to the game and is a lot of fun.

It's easiest to install it more than once. Especially since you are just getting the game. I would suggest that you have one standard playable version. It is a lot of fun as is and some mods make take away the option of playing the original game. You should probably have one install for each version of the game you wish to play: Install for Standard, Install + NTW, Install + Wesmod, etc. That way you don't have problems with software conflicts, etc.

Are there any special considerations to keep in mind for multiple installs? Any registry editing needed or the like?

ShadesWolf is correct you should not have any troubles with multiple installs, one thing I noticed on windows I had to use the Add/Remove programs feature to install the second and on copies and also vary your folder names like MTW -NTW
MTW Wes-Mod, MTW Clean it will help you keep track a little better. LOS

A couple of things to keep in mind.
When it installs make sure you rename the folder for the subsequent installs i.e. you can only have one folder in called Total War, otherwise it will just overwrite. Also, you have to keep track of the shortcuts. I just choose not to install a shortcut and then manually create one based on the version it's going back to i.e. NTW Shortcut, Standard Shortcut.

how much disk space does that require?

seems a bit over the top to me, but i can see sense in it.

andy, you should enjoy the games as is at least to get a feel for what they are like. That should keep you busy for a while. Then go to the mods to spice things up a bit. Just my thoughts on the issue. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
