Hehe...
Yep somehow true.
But I am really not sure it sheds a good light on the US Dave...
All swiss are in the army, and as such are TRAINED to use weaponry. I have stated in another topic (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=6;t=11235;st=125) that nothing can scare me more than knowing my neighboor got a weapon and no training whatsoever... Training is not required in the US to have a gun.
Now, beside training, the fact that both Swiss and Americans got a lot of rifles, but that only in the US you got a lot of crime, that's something that reflect poorly on America... Don't you think? Behavioral problem?

Louis,
I actually agree with you. I wish there was training for those with gun ownership. But unfortunately those who cause crime do not follow laws to begin with and would not go to this training or use this training ot the benifit of lawfull order. I was not trying to reflect the gun system of the US with that of the Swiss. I just like the Swiss's institution on this matter and wished it could be done in the US. Unfortunately it would almost be inpossible because of the large portions of criminals in my society. But if I have to live with animals, then I want to be armed to protect myself from animals.

Gun ownership doesn't lead to crime, although it can affect the consequences of it. Crime itself is motivated by other factors like education, poverty, social exclusion etc. the example of Switzerland and the US clearly shows this.
It is funny...
I come from Denmark. Here we have what we could call a halfway point between no guns (UK) and all guns (the Swiss).
We have a national militia constituting some 68,000 fully armed personell that has their weapons and ammo at home. But assault rifles are banned. You can own handguns and hunting rifles (but generally other rifles are permitted too), but you have to do certain things. So it is neither easy or cheap to get a weapon legally, so close to nobody has them.
We have a crimerate on par with the Swiss too. In fact just today a man shot and injured a couple. It got a headline in the national news... That is how seldom guns are used here.

It's the same in the UK. Gun crime is at such a low level that most incidents that occur get news coverage.
In Scotland, I think there were 26 gun crime incidents in 2000. That was regarded as 'too high'. Go figure, USA?
What I meant by assault rifles are banned is that civilians not in the militia can't own assault rifles, not that the militia can't have them. They have machineguns and anti-tank weapons at home as well (handgrenades are also in the closet).
