The devs statements about that the min specs of Rome gonna be the same as MTW are under serious doubt after the Gamespot article :http://www.gamespot.com/gamespot/features/all/e3_2003/bestof/6.html
(the column on the right below the pics)
wich states that the min specs gonna be higher than in MTW...
...now go figure it out http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

Though we were able to watch a battle between two moderate-sized companies, we weren't able to see any truly huge campaigns, or witness the game's technical performance on such a scale. The developers from Creative Assembly assured us that the new game's system requirements will be higher than those of Medieval and Shogun, but they'll still be very modest--we'll see how the final game turns out. We're also interested in seeing how the game's improved AI scripting will let us play through historical campaigns in which enemy generals will use the same strategies as their real-life historical counterparts.

To me modest means, oh - about a 1.5 Ghz machine w/ 256megs of RAM and a 64K video card. Fortunatly for me, my system beats all of that.

If you have something less then you have 2 choices - play at lower detail/resolution - or upgrade as the situation will only get worse as time goes on. All of this eye candy comes at a price you know - no matter how elegant the code is.

Personally, I'm not concerned. But at the very least I hope it gets tested with more than two video cards this time so that the first two months after release aren't spent trying to figure out why nobody can load the game. I should think for something this major that the QC will be adequate to say the least.

probably like "modest" which means 7.0 ghz, 20 gigs of RAM and about 14 gigabytes of HD space.

I hope CA will keep their promises of lower system specs.

If CA is aiming for a larger audience then they are going to have to reach lower end systems.

If RTW cannot be run on my pc then I won't buy it.

800Mhz, 256Ram, 64Vid, WinMe, upgrading feels like a waste of time and money.

It will probably run on my system but will have to use lower graphics settings.

That is why I am more interested in gameplay. All the eye candy games from when 800Mhz was hot collect dust. But civ2 and 3 have never left my hardrive.

I am not going to get worked up about changing pcs for a game that may come out a year from now.

Same here, I'll wont buy it if it cant run on my PIII733,GeForce 2 32 MB, 128 MB RAM...

as sweet as it looks, I refuse to spend loads of money on mhz&ram upgrades for a game.

It is simply amazing how easily we forget the words of the Devs isn't it? Taken from an Interview with Mr. Roxburgh of CA

Quote[/b] ]Are we going to need a nuclear-powered PC to run it?

Roxburgh: People look at the game and expect to have to own a 3Ghz machine to run it, but you don't. At the moment the minimum spec is about a P3 600, and you'll be able to run battles with thousands of troops on that kind of spec.

Before you start flaming me, I marked this on the net no more than two months ago (give or take a week). You are telling me in that time the specs have jumped a full gig? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif

I think not... If anything they have gotten lower, not higher.

well i have also read that one of the Devs had it on a laptop, i beleive he had somthing like a p3 700 with a 16mb card, and acording to him it ran quite smoothly. If i can find that interview i will post it.

It sucks when you can't (or won't or shouldn't) buy a game you've been following just because of feature or specifications creep. On the other hand, I'm one of these idiots who will go out and buy a new PC just for a game that I want.

But the funny thing is, the only game I'm playing with any regularity is Civilization 3 (vanilla and PTW).

I hate to say it, but if I had to buy a 356 meg video card to play RTW, I probably would. However, I do expect that it will play on a 16 mb video card just fine http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Its pretty well a given that up and coming new games are going to push the performance envelope in PC tech.

Come on and think about it,if developers just sat back we'd still be playing games that looked like the old tennis games on the tv's back in the seventie's.

You guys whinning and crying saying that if the game is beyond my computers capabilities I'm not going to get it. Do you think developement will stop and wait for you?
If my Granddad thought the same as some of you,he'd still be hand cranking a old modle "T" Ford in the dead of winter.

As a rule, don't go by minimum specs. Take Recomended specs and add that by 1/2. Its a bitch but thats the way she blows fellas.

Yea sure the game will be "playable" at the minimum specs - but it ain't gonna look like the screenshots/movies we're seeing.

I agree, but the tech market is not what it used to be.

The pc community is getting to the "do more with less" point that the rest of the corporate world is already at.

The days of daytrading migrations and dotcom herds are gone. Along with that is the need to constantly upgrade pcs and software.

I finally upgraded my work pc a couple of months ago. My ancient work pc actually ran smoother with older windows and software versions than the newer junk.

With a wife and kid I don't have the time to play that I once did. I have become the "casual gamer." It would be a waste for me to upgrade when I can only play about ten hours a week max. A large part of the game-buying market is in similar situations.

For software companies to meet the increasingly unrealistic bottom lines set by their management, and the banks that own them, they have to reach a larger market.

To reach a larger market they need their software to work on more platforms, be able to handle lower sys specs, and be entertaining enough to warrant the price.

Software companies will continue to "push the envelope" in software and hardware. However, they are also discovering that if their products won't work with what is already out there, then their sales will suffer accordingly.

Oh well...

Got to agree with ya sir Robin. Thats why I've made the decision to upgrade in 3 years from now. So I'm putting away my change and cash in my bottles(beer) and then I'll upgrade.
With all the new tech coming out like PCI-express and next generation video cards,I can't afford like $500 every 6 months on the latest video card just for a 10% increase in performance. Just putting a new floor in my house so that will set me back a bit.
Some people are being drivin away from pc gaming and going to consoles cause of the price.

GAH

Vanya disputes this. Vanya play MTW with a sub-par min spec PC and have no problems.

Vanya's workhorse had/was:
500 MHz P3
128 MB Ram
13 GB HD
Win98
16 MB TNT RIVA Video Card
SoundBlaster Live card

The bold items are those Vanya believes made His system sub-mininum spec. Vanya knows the TNT RIVA is not a card supported by CA. CA sez only TNT2 and above supported. Furthermore, it was widely publicized that the sound card Vanya had was very "problematic" and the source of many problems and a giver of lag.

Vanya have no problems playing MTW at all. Vanya gets lag with BEEG games (ie, 4v4s), but otherwise very playable. When VI came out, Vanya started getting weird tiling problems on SP campaign map. As youz would scroll, the tiles would arbitrarily shift around, leaving the map unreadable. Sure, Vanya KNEW that His king and princes were not REALLY standing around in the middle of the atlantic... But, it was nothing a quick driver update wouldn't fix (driver update meant Vanya could play on in SP http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pat.gif ).

Vanya never had any problems with Olde Shoggy and very few in MTW.

Vanya ponders... maybe RTW will work on same system? Vanya sprinkles CPU with the Horseman's own urine and fecal nectar in hopes that it will bless the chip with fecundity.

Vanya sez... min spec should work fine. If it does not, then its not really a "min" spec, is it?

Vanya sez... game should work on ANY video and sound card on ze market with 16 MB or more.

Vanya sez... as long as you have your rams all charging west, youz have no problems.

well while on upgrading i cant speak on the best way my own way holds merit

with CPU's i wait for twice as much power i have currently and then buy 2 thirds the differecne (confused well let me demonstrate)

i have a 1.6 ghz
so i wait till a 3.2 ghz is out
then i buy a 2.6 ghz

and with graphic cards i gnerally "skip" a generation ie i currenlt have a geforce4 ti - because of that i dont buy into the ATI cards BUT whe nthe next gen of cards come out ill buy a low-high (by that i meen my current g4 Ti is the lowest g4 ti availble) of that

(and i never upgrade my soundcard)

with this i upgrade once a year with acceptable costs

unfortunatly my sceme has been totaly wrecked by PCI express but hey....

Gah, I have a 1,4 GHz T-Bird, which is roughly equal to a 1,6 GHz P4. My mobo can't support faster processors than 1,4 GHz (PCB revision is too old), so I can't upgrade just the CPU.

I hope the CPU will be enough for smooth-ish playing; I've got 768 megs of RAM and a Radeon 9800 Pro so those shouldn't be a problem.

GAH

Vanya had good laugh.

Vanya not recommend monitor head soup. Very "rubbery" in taste and consistency. Vanya sez... make sure you stir pot while monitor IS PLUGGED IN and make sure youz use a METAL spoon.

Vanya actually does have monitor... and olde behemoth (ie, not flat panel). Since Vanya has no head, Vanya makes wife give Him the play by play as the action unfolds. Then Vanya gives orders and wife enters 'moves' via keyboard/mouse. Vanya sez... "Attack", and wife sez... "How hard?". Vanya sez... "Go up", wife sez... "How high?". Vanya sez... "Go down"... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif Youz get the picture...

When Vanya is being chaste on the field, Vanya makes sure He flees promptly so as to rectify the situation. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif

Vanya has no head... but has vast collection of heads.

Well i understand how some people feel the pain of games that are asking for so much power to play the game at its full potential...i feel that it has to do the with how much work goes into the programing of the game..i have a pretty good machine.
Athlon 1700XP
512 RAM PCI33
Geforce 3 TI200 128MB DDR Ram
Soundblaster Live 5.1
40gig Hardrive
Windows Me running at the moment but XP Home is available, as well as 98se.
that the basics and i dont want to be to indepth but i play some older games and some of the newer ones and i feel that most new games chew too much juice..i tried out Freelancer with the works and it rain well..i feel that the work was done on this one...i played AvP2 and even with it all turned up it ran well. But some of the latest games should say on the side of the box "Recommended Specification only a PC bought within the last six months with the top of ther line hardware will run this game at such a level as that you will enjoy it " The game may be very good, but i feel that some programmers are geting lazy, thats why consoles are doing well because you dont have the upgrade dramas or specification problems. Medievel is my best game but it chews the juice..i have seen all the hints in the forums and tips to get it going better...but it is a fat pig that puts its snout in the trough..Rome is gonna be no better i feel, but i will get a new card for my machine if need be when it comes out...cant help loving the total war game

i played the demo with a celeron 485 and intergrated graphics intel 810
now that's low specs!
it was also playable with that!
so playable one unit of eleahants killed over 300 men with no losses
and 50 cavalry (soul something or other) killed about 400
so dont complain about your system wondering about whether it will run because the videos and sreenshots look so cool

well, my laptop has the power to run R:TW, it appears that the integrated Via Unichrome Pro graphics are not as dire as anticipated......... but, CA weren't lying when they state only ATI and nVidia as supported chipsets! the entire battlemap was a patchwork of poorly rendered or totally unrendered textures, many displaying a hall-of-mirrors effect.

i may be wrong here, but i think its safe to say that if you do not have an ATI or nVidia card you need not apply.

fortunately it runs great on my desktop machine.

No, that won't work. I have a 128 mb Radeon 9600, and I still get a bit of screenlag when there are more 1000 guys in melee at once.

Go out and buy a cheap 128 mb video card and maybe some ram, that should be enough.
