It's generally easier to go with the Dutch traders as they give you muskets right away with no strings attached, However the portugese come earlier and you can get muskets with them by building a citidel which also gives you a hefty koku income. Also note you are likely to get rebellions in your provinces if you go christian, and these rebel armies will often have Warrior monks in them. So I would say that if you are Shimazu, go Christian, but for the other clans wait for the Dutch.

Another thing to keep in mind is that, if you go with the Catholic Portuguese option, you can eventually build a Gun Factory. Musketeers trained at a Gun Factory gain an immediate +1 bonus to their honor.

Note that, in order to build a Gun Factory, you must have built a Cathedral somewhere in your empire, and in the province where you want to build the Gun Factory, you must have built a Citadel, a Portuguese Trading Post, a Port, and an armory. Aki and Hitachi are two provinces that are well-suited for building these (there are others in the area of the map most commonly occupied by the Mori).

And quite the opposite can happen minus the monks for the christian rebellions. It was kind of funny seeing a heavy christian population reblling against the new Daimyo
