Ok, you're throwing a feast (in the MTW/RTW period).
Name your civilization
What foods you're serving
Who you're inviting
And where you're holding it

Food

A glorious orgy of wine, food and women in the new imperial palace Londinium for my legionairres celebrating the conquest of Pictland. Along with the troops I'll have some of my political enemies from the senate, so I can keep an eye on them, as well as anyone else worth having in roman society. As for the food, a cornucopia of delights from across the empire, including a strange new thing called a haggis from the north...

Any other civ partic a MTW era one would have awful meals by our standards, apart from the moslem ones I think, due to the lack of eating habits or plates...

I am in the castle of Verona, celebrating the victory of my Goth troops against the Bavari. The throne room is dark, only lightened by the dull reflexes of fire on steel, and the clatter of the prisoners chained in the dungeons feebly resonates under the vast arched ceilings.

I made sure that all the nearby potentates are here to witness my triumph, either around the big oaken table, drinking red wine and exchanging stories, or in a somewhat less confortable position (did I mention the dungeons ?) The Bizantine Hexarc of Ravenna has sent a delegation (half of which are spies), and so did the Huns, the Longobards, the Gepidae and the Avars.

To honor my noble and less noble guests I borrowed the Hibernian cook from the nearby Irish monastery of Bobbio, and his assistants are just serving the main course, which -according to his claims, and they'd better be true- is the same dish that the scholar Mac Conglinne prepared to bait the bulimic demon that plagued Cathal Mac Finguine, King of Munster.

Quote[/b] ]
"Get up," said Mac Conglinne. And he called for juicy old bacon, and tender corned-beef, and full-fleshed wether, and honey in the comb, and English salt on a beautiful polished dish of white silver, along with four perfectly straight white hazel spits to support the joints. The viands which he enumerated were procured for him, and he fixed unspeakable, huge pieces on the spits. Then putting a linen apron about him below, and placing a flat linen cap on the crown of his head, he lighted a fair four-ridged, four-apertured, four-cleft fire of ash-wood, without smoke, without fume, without sparks. He stuck a spit into each of the portions, and as quick was he about the spits and fire as a hind about her first fawn, or as a roe, or a swallow, or a bare spring wind in the flank of March. He rubbed the honey and the salt into one piece after another. And big as the pieces were that were before the fire, there dropped not to the ground out of these four pieces as much as would quench a spark of a candle; but - what there was of relish in them went into their very center. It had been explained to Pichan that the very reason why the scholar had come was to save Cathal. Now, when the pieces were ready, Mac Conglinne cried out, "Ropes and cords here" ...

NB: all the above is quite accurate, except that the Vision of Mac Conglinne (http://www.polisci.ucla.edu/faculty/boneill/vision.html) was composed in the 12th century.
(but the recipe may well have existed before than that, and anyway the story is great fun, as with all Irish medieval literature).
