MEDIEVAL: TOTAL WAR - VIKING INVASION
=====================================
V2.01 Readme Documentation
Date: 15th September 2003
Website: http://www.totalwar.com
INTRODUCTION
============
This document details the changes incorporated in the Medieval: Total War - Viking Invasion version 2.01 patch.
General Fixes
-------------
- Fixed a bug where cavalry would receive a charge bonus ad infinitum under certain circumstances.
- Removed a command line cheat that would unlock the camera giving an unfair advantage on the battlefield.
Single Player Fixes
------------------
- Reinforcements in campaign battles now appear in the order selected in the pre-battle screen.
- Kings will no longer die of old age at exactly 56 years.
Multiplayer Fixes
-----------------
- All multiplayer players will now appear in the Medieval: Total War chat room and can talk to one another. Please note that Medieval: Total War games will not show up for Viking Invasion players and vice versa.
- The occasional crash/lockup bug when a player quits from a multiplayer game has been eradicated.

I read a post on .com where someone said his King died at age 57. I think that's probably just a coincidence. Although, a CA staffer once said that he wanted to turn the 56 bug into a Heinz 57 bug http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

Presumably, since it's not mentioned anywhere, installing this patch will NOT interfere with current campaigns and save games? Or is it just assumed by everyone that it does? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif
EXCELLENT NEWS
I was especially surprised to see they brought the entire community back together in Gamespy and fixed some multiplayer related crashes

Out of curiosity, is this patch the official one? Because there's nothing on .com about the patch.

This is the official one. It's been released by Activision, who maybe didn't give CA an exact notification of that.

no queue bug fix?
and for those installing the patch OVER modded games, dont bother showing up in the apothecary for help when yer game blows up ;) the response is going to be: 'uninstall everything, clean out all files, reinstall the game, patch. repeat as needed.'
K.
a small warning to modders,
If VI is not in your registry then the patch wont work,
(the dude who compiled the installer needs a stint in the naughty cupboard)
if you have no idea what i mean by that, then you do not need to worry, the patch will probably work just fine,
if you do not have a copy of VI in windows registry go browse the direct download page here at the org (not 3D) and look for VI modders patch. simply backup the files
Medieval_TW.EXE and version.inf, then install the content of zipfile into medieval directory.

Hello, thank you for your comments, I have a few questions:
1) Prior to IV, Kings died with slight variation (its been so long now I forget the exact number), if I recall correctly, at or around 72 (or should that be 79?). Fairly predictable, the variation roughly between 2 to 5 years. [Just woke up memory is weak at the moment.]
Post IV and with "bug", Kings died at 56. Precisely predictable. No variation.
The question is post-"patch", using the above as a guide, what level of variation would you describe in comparison?
2) Is the age of death OPTIONABLE? Can this be modded?
3) The "bug" added a level of pressure (most realistic) to produce an Heir that was not present in pre-IV MTW. It made the fact that a Campaign would be lost with the death of an "heir-less" King TRULY relevant
Is there the same "pressure" and "relevancy"?

This sounds interesting, but the reality may be less so. Seems as if CA is attempting to preserve real relevance for Heirs, but I hesitant to install the Patch.
I found the Age "bug" and the Reinforcement "bug" to both be EXTREMELY realistic, enjoyable, fun, and appropriate.
Thank you in advance for your response.

TS, heretofore, has not commented on the "Reinforcement Bug":
Please tell me what general, what period and what engagement, wherein the general in question experienced ABSOLUTE confidence in his "reinforcements"? Confidence being, that they would arrive "en masse" (or arrive at all); precisely as directed; and, in the "order" that was directed?
Absolutely, NEVER happened, anywhere, any point, for anyone, NEVER in history. You folks want this game to be "realistic" or what? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

I don't feel that these troops should be looked upon as reinforcements just arriving on the battlefield. They are actually troops already present on the field but held in reserve to "reinforce" a weak spot in your line or exploit a breach in the enemy's formation. Hence the irrelevancy of the "arriving in masse or in formation" theory IMO. Rather like:
"Withdraw two companies of longbow and order two companies of feudal men at arms to bolster the right flank."
This wouldn't take much time or effort with the reserves already gathered on the field. One flag to signal the longbow to withdraw and a combination of signals or a courier to direct the feudal men at arms to advance to the right flank.
Even a general who is severely outnumbered will hold one or two companies in reserve until the foe reveals its intent or makes a breakthrough.

Guys, you better download the patch soon because there's a post on .com saying:
Quote[/b] ]Bad news folks: despite Gil confirming the patch was official, Activision states that it was released prematurely, and is in the process of taking it off their own download server, as well as requesting all mirrors to pull their copy.
So regrettably and reluctantly, 3D Gamers is no longer carrying the file.
I'll let everyone know as soon as we've got the *real* official patch online.

What? They've taken the patch down in order to meet some meaningless commercial release date that some bean-pusher has decided on? What possible advantage could removing the patch and then putting it back up in a few days gain them? I'm going to try and host it Up yours activision

What I would do is download it ASAP and then wait until we get more info before you install it.
Otherwise you might find out tomorrow that the patch that was released is just fine but that it won't be "officially" released until December or even later.
My guess is that Activision will officially release the patch when they make their announcement about Rome's release date.

Here's the post where Gil confirmed that the patch was "official"
Quote[/b] ]It is indeed the official patch. Our site's front page hasn't been updated yet but the patch is now available from the downloads page:
www.totalwar.com/community/download.htm
(The arrival of the patch on various sites before an official statement from us can best be ascribed to the commitment of Activision US to let gamers enjoy the patch as soon as possible :-)

Thanks for the link to the Colloseum. I guess I was right about my original prediction which I made a few days ago. They unofficially released the official patch the same day they announced the release date for Rome.
