In many different places in this board I have seen people sya that the Turcoman Foot Soldiers are the best archers in the game. Why is this so? I looked ar their stats and they don't seem too good. They have crap attack and morale and Shortbows. The only thing they seem to have are speed and defense. Also I've never had too much trouble killing them as Bystantines and Catholics. Could someone please explain why they are soo good or direct to the thread that says for certain they are the best?

They have armour, and they have a natural loose formation, which makes it harder to hit them. And despite the stats, they hold up pretty well in melee, especially in forests.

Turc foot is good, especially in combo with futuwas, but not the best archers surely compared to longbows or Trebizond. Are you sure its Turc foot and not Turcoman Horse Archers?

I agree. Turcoman horse is more famous than the foot one.

No he's right. Many people do feel that the Turcoman foot do well vs almost all other archers. Basically for the reasons already mentioned. Turcoman Horse are good as well, but not as good as Szekely, Faris, Mamluk Horse Archers, Byzantine Cavalry...but their more Medium Cavs. As far as light Horse Archers, I prefer Turcoman Horse.

Turcoman Foot Archers aren't hard to deal with, just better if used correctly. (not always better)

What NewJeffCT said is what I am talking about. Could someone please direct me to that thread or bump it so I can see what makes the Turcomans soo good.
Hopefully Sinan because he seems to love all turks.

I did a little searching and found several threads,this one (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=15;t=4470;hl=turcoman+and+foot) in particular regards futuwwas vs turcoman foot (note that the last poster in this thread lists incorrect stats for futuwwas -- i checked in the crusaders_unit_prod11.txt file which the game runs from). ... was reading more of the search results and think i found what you were looking for here (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=15;t=7264;hl=turcoman+and+foot), page 2 of the topic delves into turcoman foot . Very interesting discussion.

IMO Turcoman are probably one of the best for missile duels with their armour and shields. But, i still prefer futuwwas for their good charge/attack. As far as archer accuracy (some people will swear unit X shoots more accurately), i think the tests show that a shortbow is a shortbow. Unit formation has more impact on accuracy: 2-deep in close, 3-deep in loose and your archers shoot with full accuracy.

Saturnus is not wrong about the stats for the Futs. They have 4 attack and -2 defense which gives 2 combatpoints when evened out.

Turcomans did oddly enough produce some interesting results along with Jannisary Archers when I tested them back before the patch to 1.01. But shortbows are just that, they are the same. But the loose order of the Turcomans can perhaps give them an advantage when it comes to accuracy. But it certainly gives them a benefit defensively in a ranged battle. Yer right, he was correct. However, the stats he quoted are w/o the shield bonus (not to get picky or anything http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif ). With shield bonus (+2 futs, +1 TurcFoot), and better morale & charge, futs get the edge overall IMO.

It depends what you're using them for. If you want archer/flanker combination, futuwwas are better but if you want pure archers then turcoman foot are better.

Turcomans are the best pure archers because, if you're using archers for archery only, you don't want them in a melee battle. Their speed allows them to avoid melee battles better. They have better suvivability in case they get into melee. Their higher defense means you have more time to help them using other troops. Their armor is also better for archer battles.

Morale is a problem but not as much if you're keeping them from being in melee. Attack is not really needed if you're not using them in melee, anyway.

Futuwwas are more useful since you could also use them for flanking but you'll be replacing them more often than turcoman.
